Great Cow Harbor 10K
The Great Cow Harbor 10-Kilometer Run is a road running event held annually in the Long Island village of Northport, New York, on the third Saturday each September. The race is co-organized by its organizing committee (The Great Cow Harbor 10-Kilometer Run, Inc.), the Northport Running Club, and Northport American Legion Post 694. The title sponsor is Capital One Bank. Proceeds from the race benefit several local charities as well as the Special Olympics of Long Island. History The Great Cow Harbor 10K was created by John Rakucewicz, with its initial run in 1977. 1,002 runners finished the first Cow Harbor 10K. The race steadily grew throughout the 1980s; in 1985, due to the rapid growth, the race instituted a staggered start (named for designer John J. Pitfick), which is still in use today. Northport is a historic maritime Administrative divisions of New York#Village, village on the northern shore of Long Island in Suffolk County, New York, United States. Initially designated Great Cow Harbour by 17th-century English colonists, the area was officially renamed Northport in 1837. Hurricane Ivan was a large, long-lived, Cape Verde hurricane that caused widespread damage in the Caribbean and United States. Ryan Hall (born October 14, 1982, in Kirkland, Washington) is a retired American long-distance runner who holds the U.S. record in the half marathon. With his half marathon record time (59:43), he became the first U.S. runner to break the one-hour barrier in the event. He is also the only American to run a sub-2:05 marathon (2:04:58 at the 2011 Boston marathon).
