Corringham is a civil parish in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated east of Gainsborough and south of Scunthorpe. Corringham comprises the two contiguous villages of Great Corringham and Little Corringham and at the 2011 census had a recorded population of 523. The hamlet of Yawthorpe lies due east of the village, and that of Bonsdale to the north. Gowin Knight, the first principal librarian of the British Museum was born here in 1713. Gowin Knight
Gowin Knight FRS (10 September 1713 – 8 June 1772) was a British physicist who, in 1745, discovered a process for producing strongly magnetised steel. He also served as the first principal librarian of the British Museum. Biography Born in Corringham, a small parish in Lincolnshire, Knight was educated at Leeds Grammar School and Magdalen Hall, Oxford. He was awarded a BA in October 1736, MA in June 1739 and MB in February 1742, after which he lived in London as a practising physician. In 1745, he discovered a process for forming strongly magnetised steel, which he used to develop a compass needle able to function with greater precision. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society the same year after presenting his findings to the Society. West Lindsey is a local government district in Lincolnshire, England. Its council is based in Gainsborough. History The district was formed on 1 April 1974, from the urban districts of Gainsborough, Market Rasen, along with Caistor Rural District, Gainsborough Rural District and Welton Rural District, all in the historic Parts of Lindsey. The district council moved to neofficesin Marshall's Yard in Gainsborough in January 2008. In the 2016 EU referendum, West Lindsey voted 61.8% leave (33,847 votes) to 38.2% remain (20,906 votes).
