Great Britain At The 2022 Winter Olympics
Great Britain competed at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China, from 4 to 20 February 2022. The Great Britain team consists of 50 athletes (27 men and 23 women). Eve Muirhead and Dave Ryding were the country's flagbearers during the opening ceremony. Meanwhile curler Bruce Mouat was the flagbearer during the closing ceremony. British athletes won a total of two medals (one gold, one silver). This result was described as a 'disappointment' by UK Sport. Despite the underwhelming games, Great Britain ranked 19th on the medal table, the same ranking as the previous three Winter Olympic Games. Medal and performance targets In July 2018, UK Sport announced a preliminary target of 5–12 medals for the Games, which would at least sustain the level of success experienced at the previous two Games, in both of which 5 medals were won. Great Britain, represented by the British Olympic Association (BOA), competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, from 7 to 23 February 2014. The British team was made up of athletes from the whole United Kingdom including Northern Ireland, whose athletes may have elected to hold Irish citizenship, allowing them to represent either Great Britain or Ireland. Additionally some British overseas territories competed separately from Britain in Olympic competition. A total of 56 athletes competed in 11 sports making it the biggest contingent that Great Britain had sent to a Winter Olympic Games for twenty-six years. Bobby Lammie
Bobby Lammie (born 10 February 1997) is a Scottish curler, originally from Stranraer. He currently plays second on Team Bruce Mouat. Career Juniors Lammie has been a part of the Mouat rink since 2015 when they were in juniors. Lammie was the alternate on the team at the 2015 World Junior Curling Championships, where they won a bronze medal. The following year, Lammie was promoted to third, and they won a gold medal at the 2016 World Junior Curling Championships. The following year, the team won the gold medal at the 2017 Winter Universiade. While the team was still in juniors, they won the 2015 Dumfries Challenger Series World Curling Tour event. Curling At The 2022 Winter Olympics
The curling competitions of the 2022 Winter Olympics were held at the Beijing National Aquatics Centre, one of the Olympic Green venues. Curling competitions were scheduled for every day of the games, from February 2 to February 20. This was the eighth time that curling was part of the Olympic program. In each of the men's, women's and mixed doubles competitions, 10 nations competed. The mixed doubles competition was expanded for its second appearance in the Olympics. A total of 120 quota spots (60 per sex) were distributed to the sport of curling, an increase of four from the 2018 Winter Olympics. Victoria Wright (born 15 August 1993) is a retired Scottish curler from Stranraer, and 2022 Olympic Champion in women's curling, playing third on Team Muirhead. Career Before playing for Muirhead, Wright curled for Hannah Fleming. She was the alternate for Scotland at the 2013 World Junior Curling Championships, where the team won a silver medal. She won the 2018 Scottish Women's Curling Championship as lead for Fleming to qualify for her first World Championship. At the 2018 World Women's Curling Championship, the team struggled, finishing the round robin with a 5–7 record. For the 2018–19 season, Wright joined team Muirhead as the alternate. Mili Smith
Mili Smith (born 1 March 1998) is a retired Scottish curler from Perth. She was the alternate on the British team that won the gold medal at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Career Juniors Smith was a member of Team GB at the 2016 Winter Youth Olympics, playing lead on a team skipped by Ross Whyte. The team finished 5th overall. In the mixed doubles event, Smith was paired with South Korea's Hong Yun-jeong. They lost their lone match and were eliminated. Smith joined the Sophie Jackson junior rink in 2016. Hailey Duff
Hailey Caitlin Rose Duff (born 24 January 1997) is a Scottish curler from Forfar. She is the 2022 Olympic Champion in women's curling. At the international level, she is a curler, playing lead for skip Eve Muirhead. Isabel Atkin (born 21 June 1998) is a British-American freestyle skier who competes internationally for Great Britain. She won bronze in women's slopestyle at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, the first British Olympic medal in skiing. Early life Atkin was born in Boston, United States to English father Mike and Malaysian mother Winnie. She has a younger sister Zoe Atkin who is also a freestyle skier. Charlotte Bankes
Charlotte Bankes (born 10 June 1995) is a British-born snowboarder who represented France in international competition before the start of the 2018–2019 season and Great Britain from that point onwards. She competed at the 2022 Winter Olympics, in Women's snowboard cross. Career Bankes and her family moved from Hemel Hempstead to Puy-Saint-Vincent in the southern Alps in 1999. She had already started skiing by this time, having first tried it at age two, but took up snowboarding in the footsteps of her brothers William and Thomas, who have competed in the sport internationally. Laura Deas ( ; born 19 August 1988) is a British sportswoman, best known as a skeleton racer on the World Cup circuit, representing the British Bobsleigh and Skeleton Association. Skeleton (sport)
Skeleton is a winter sliding sport in which a person rides a small sled, known as a skeleton bobsled (or -sleigh), down a frozen track while lying face down and head-first. The sport and the sled may have been named from the bony appearance of the sled. Unlike other sliding sports of bobsleigh and luge, the race always involves single riders. Like bobsleigh, but unlike luge, the race begins with a running start from the opening gate at the top of the course. The skeleton sled is thinner and heavier than the luge sled, and skeleton gives the rider more precise control of the sled. Skeleton is the slowest of the three sliding sports, as skeleton's face-down, head-first riding position is less aerodynamic than luge's face-up, feet-first ride.
