Graveyard Of The Great Lakes
The Graveyard of the Great Lakes comprises the southern shore of Lake Superior between Grand Marais, Michigan, and Whitefish Point, though Grand Island has been mentioned as a western terminus. More ships have wrecked in this area than any other part of Lake Superior. Over 200 wrecks are in the area of Whitefish Point of the 550 wrecks in Lake Superior. For a distance west of Whitefish Bay, there are no natural harbors in which ships can "ride out" storms. Also, as late as the 20th century, weather prediction was extremely unreliable, "a haphazard process, very imprecise and unreliable." A ship might have no idea of the weather into which it was sailing, or the weather coming at it. These shipwrecks are now protected by the Whitefish Point Underwater Preserve. ''129'' (also known as ''Barge 129'', or ''No.129'') was an American whaleback barge in service between 1893 and 1902. Built between December 1892 and May 1893, in Superior, Wisconsin, (or West Superior, Wisconsin), by Alexander McDougall (ship designer), Alexander McDougall's Superior Shipbuilding Company, American Steel Barge Company, for McDougall's fleet of the same name, based in Buffalo, New York. She was one of a class of distinctive and experimental ships designed and built by McDougall. The whalebacks were designed to be more stable in high seas. They had rounded decks, and lacked the normal straight sides seen on traditional lake freighters. ''129'' entered service on May 22, hauling wheat from Superior. SS ''John Mitchell'' was a steel-hulled, American lake freighter in service between 1907 and 1911. She was built in 1906 by the Great Lakes Engineering Works in St. Clair, Michigan, for the Cornell Steamship Company of Chicago, Illinois, which was managed by C.W. Elphicke. She entered service in 1907, and had a sister ship named ''William B. Davock''. Throughout her career, ''John Mitchell'' carried iron ore and coal. SS Indiana (1848)
The ''SS Indiana'' was a freighter built in 1848. It was built with an 18-foot steam engine with an Erickson Screw Propeller. It served Lake Superior as a passenger ship and later became a transporter for iron ore after the opening of the Soo Locks. During a storm, the boat started leaking near the propeller shaft, causing the ship to founder at Crisp Point Light on June 6, 1856. It was carrying iron ore from Marquette, Michigan during the time of its accident. In 1979, the Smithsonian Institution, the United States Army Corps of Engineers and the United States Navy salvaged the steam engine from Lake Superior. The engine and related artifacts are held in the collection of the National Museum of American History. SS ''Edmund Fitzgerald'' was an American Great Lakes freighter that sank in Lake Superior during a storm on November 10, 1975, with the loss of the entire crew of 29 men. When launched on June 7, 1958, she was the largest ship on North America's Great Lakes, and she remains the largest to have sunk there. She was located in deep water on November 14, 1975, by a U.S. Navy aircraft detecting magnetic anomalies, and found soon afterwards to be in two large pieces. SS ''Cyprus'' was a lake freighter that sank during a gale storm on Lake Superior on 11 October 1907. The ship went down in 460 feet (140 m) of water at , in United States waters about 8 miles (7 nm; 13 km) north of Deer Park in Luce County, Michigan. All but one of the 23 members of the crew perished. Construction ''Cyprus'' was built in Lorain, Ohio and launched 17 August 1907. SS Comet (1857)
SS ''Comet'' was a steamship that operated on the Great Lakes. ''Comet'' was built in 1857 as a wooden-hulled propeller-driven cargo vessel that was soon adapted to carry passengers. She suffered a series of maritime accidents prior to her final sinking in 1875 causing the loss of ten lives. She became known as the only treasure ship of Lake Superior because she carried 70 tons of Montana silver ore when she sank. The first attempts to salvage her cargo in 1876 and 1938 were unsuccessful. ''Comet'' was finally salvaged in the 1980s when the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society illegally removed artifacts from the wreck. Miztec (schooner Barge)
The ''Miztec'' was built as a 3-masted schooner in 1890. She was later converted to a schooner barge and served as a consort for lumber hookers on the Great Lakes. She escaped destruction in a severe 1919 storm that sank her longtime companion, the SS ''Myron'', only to sink on the traditional day of bad luck, Friday the 13th, 1921, with the loss of all hands. She came to rest on Lake Superior's bottom off Whitefish Point near the ''Myron''. The ''Miztec’s'' wreck was illegally salvaged in the 1980s. Artifacts from the ''Miztec'' became the property of the State of Michigan after they were seized in a 1992 Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DNRE) raid on the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum.
