Cult Image
In the practice of religion, a cult image is a human-made object that is venerated or worshipped for the deity, spirit or daemon that it embodies or represents. In several traditions, including the ancient religions of Egypt, Greece and Rome, and modern Hinduism, cult images in a temple may undergo a daily routine of being washed, dressed, and having food left for them. Processions outside the temple on special feast days are often a feature. Religious images cover a wider range of all types of images made with a religious purpose, subject, or connection. In many contexts "cult image" specifically means the most important image in a temple, kept in an inner space, as opposed to what may be many other images decorating the temple. The term idol is a pejorative term for a cult image, except in Indian English, where it is widely accepted as a neutral English term for a murti or cult image. "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image" ( he, לֹא-תַעֲשֶׂה לְךָ פֶסֶל, וְכָל-תְּמוּנָה, Lōʾ-t̲aʿăśeh lək̲ā p̲esel, wək̲ol-təmûnāh) is an abbreviated form of one of the Ten Commandments which, according to the Book of Deuteronomy, were spoken by God to the Israelites and then written on stone tablets by the Finger of God. It continues, "''..any graven image, or any likeness f any thingthat sin heaven above, or that sin the earth beneath, or that sin the water under earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them.''" ''Graven Images: 3 stories'' is a 1982 children's book written by Paul Fleischman that was awarded a Newbery Honor in 1983. Synopsis The book is a collection of three supernatural-themed stories that all revolve around statues. In the first, titled "Binnacle Boy," a statue of a sailor boy on the deck of a boat is the only witness to the deaths of the entire ship's crew. "St. Crispin's Follower" is a comedy about a shoemaker's apprentice and his hopeless love for the town beauty. The final story is called "The Man of Influence." It tells the story of a starving artist who agrees to a job commissioned by a ghost. Ray Norris is an astrophysicist and science communicator, based at the CSIRO Australia Telescope National Facility, and Western Sydney University, and conducts research in astrophysics and Aboriginal Astronomy. Early life Ray Norris was born in London and grew up in Brookmans Park, Hertfordshire, England in 1953. He attended high school at St. Albans School and then went to Cambridge University, where he received an honours degree in theoretical physics. He then went to the Jodrell Bank Observatory of the University of Manchester where he received his PhD in radio-astronomy in 1978, working on astrophysical masers. Deep Wound was an American hardcore punk band formed in 1982 in Westfield, Massachusetts. They released one self-titled 7" and contributed two songs to the compilation LP, '' Bands That Could Be God'', both of which are sought after by fans and record collectors alike. The band influenced the Massachusetts hardcore scene and the development of grindcore. History In the early 1980s, J Mascis and Deep Wound vocalist Charlie Nakajima lived in Amherst, Massachusetts, and attended the same high school. In 1982, guitarist Lou Barlow met Scott Helland at the Oi! singles bin in a local record shop. Soon after, Scott posted a flier looking for musicians who were influenced by bands such as Anti-Pasti and Discharge.
