Gravel Island National Wildlife Refuge
Gravel Island National Wildlife Refuge is a National Wildlife Refuge located off the Door Peninsula in Wisconsin. Founded in 1913, the refuge consists of two Lake Michigan islands that act as nesting grounds for native bird species. It is inhabited by large colonies of shore birds and waterfowl in addition to hosting a pair of great black-backed gulls, one of farthest westward breeding sites of the species. History In the years before the refuge's founding, multiple expeditions were made to the islands. Ornithologist Henry L. Ward, then-curator of the Milwaukee Public Museum, visited the area numerous times to study the herring gull populations. While visiting Gravel Island in 1906 and 1907, Ward noted very large colonies of herring gulls as well as Caspian terns while observing their behavior and collecting specimens from the island. Liberty Grove, Wisconsin
Liberty Grove is a town in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,096 at the 2020 census. The unincorporated communities of Ellison Bay, Gills Rock, North Bay, Northport, and Rowleys Bay are in the town. History Liberty Grove was formed from the northern Gibraltar Township in 1859. The state of Wisconsin was less than a decade old at the time. The early settlers at the time harvested the quality timber, fished the fish, and planted the cheap farmland. Some import early settlers in Liberty Grove include, Allen Bradley, Daniel Rice, and Andrew Weborg. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 189.5 square miles (490.7 km2), of which, 53.6 square miles (138.8 km2) of it is land and 135.9 square miles (352.0 km2) of it (71.72%) is water.
