Graton is an unincorporated town and census-designated place (CDP) in west Sonoma County, California, United States. The population was 1,707 at the 2010 census. Graton's ZIP code is 95444. The town also has a culinary reputation attributed to two restaurants in the area. The town of Graton is roughly 20 miles from the California coastline. Graton's agriculture was historically concentrated on apple farming, but like most of rural Sonoma County it now focuses on wine production. Geography Graton has a total area of , all land. Graton is located at the southeastern end of Green Valley, on the east bank of the seasonally flooding Atascadero Creek. Graton Rancheria
The Graton Rancheria was a property in the coastal hills of northern California, about two miles (3 km) northwest of Sebastopol. The site is about southwest of the hamlet of Graton, population 1,815 in 2000. The area is a few miles west of Santa Rosa, the largest of Sonoma County's nine cities and the County seat, population 147,595 in 2000. It was a former rancheria for Central Coast and Central valley tribes, including the Southern Pomo, a Hokan-speaking tribe, and Coast Miwok. Graton Resort & Casino is an Indian casino and hotel outside Rohnert Park, California, that opened on November 5, 2013. It is owned and operated by the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria. The casino has 3,000 slot machines, 144 table games, and a poker room. In November 2016 it opened an adjacent hotel with 200 rooms. History The tribe announced plans in February 2003 for a casino to be built at a 1,700-acre site on Sears Point, near the shore of San Pablo Bay. The plan sparked widespread criticism about the potential effects on wetland restoration efforts and increased traffic on Highway 37, leading the tribe to consider other locations in Rohnert Park and Petaluma. Françoise Graton
Françoise Graton (4 June 1930 – 7 November 2014) was a Québécoise actress who lived and worked in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She contributed much to the advancement of theatre in Montreal and particularly in involvement with children. Biography After studying at the Collège Marie de France, Françoise Graton joined the Mask Company and started at a very young age on stage and on television. For a few seasons, she directed the theatre at the Percé Art Center. In 1964 she founded the Nouvelle Compagnie Théâtrale (NCT) with Georges Groulx and Gilles Pelletier, her companion in life. Jean Graton (10 August 1923 – 21 January 2021) was a French comic book author and cartoonist. Graton created the famous character Michel Vaillant and the eponymous series in 1957. Biography Graton was born in Nantes, France, in 1923. He moved to Brussels in 1947 and worked there in animation and advertising companies. He was hired by '' Spirou'' magazine in 1952, for which he illustrated '' Belles Histoires de l'Oncle Paul''. Determined to create and draw his own characters, he got a job for '' Tintin'' magazine. From 1953, he published his own stories in ''Tintin''. Some consisting of a few strips, and most related to sports and automobiles, were published in 1957 by Le Lombard in an album entitled ''Ca c'est du sport!''. The Studio Graton, or Studio Jean Graton is a drawing studio that helped French cartoonist Jean Graton draw various comics series, among them the famous series Michel Vaillant. History In 1962, Jean Graton hires an assistant, the young Christian Denayer, to help him with the drawing of the sets and cars and the colorization of the Michel Vaillant plates. After eight years of collaboration, Denayer left to work for Tibet and what was already the embryo of the Graton Studio was expanded to include Daniel Bouchez and Christian Lippens. The studio was created by Jean Graton in the mid 1980s, contributing to several albums. It was made up of various drawers. Louis Caryl Graton
Louis Caryl Graton (1880–1970), American geologist, chemist and educator, began his career in 1900 as assayer for Ledyard Gold Mines Ltd., near Rockdale, Ontario. He moved on to Canadian Goldfields Ltd. later in 1900, then entered McGill University as a graduate student, studying many of the famous mines of Ontario and Quebec. He continued his studies at Cornell University in 1902–1903. In 1903, Graton was hired by Waldemar Lindgren of the US Geological Survey to assist Lindgren's restudy of the Cripple Creek, Colorado goldfields. This began an association that lasted until Lindgren's death in 1939. While at the USGS, he studied ore deposits in the southern Appalachians, New Mexico and California. In 1909, Graton was appointed assistant professor of mining geology at Harvard; he advanced to full professor in 1912, a position he would hold for 37 years.
