Gratallops is a municipality in the ''comarca'' of the Priorat in Catalonia Catalonia (; ca, Catalunya ; Aranese Occitan: ''Catalonha'' ; es, Cataluña ) is an autonomous community of Spain, designated as a '' nationality'' by its Statute of Autonomy. What brings the most fame to the village is that it has been a focal point for the reemergence of high quality wines from the Priorat region. Clos Mogador
Clos Mogador produces estate bottled wines in Gratallops, Catalonia in the DOQ Priorat. Founded in 1979 by René Barbier III and his wife, Isabelle Meyer, the winery was part of a new wave of "Clos" wineries that released their first joint 1989 vintage to great acclaim. They have gone on to garner impressive scores by wine critics and have built up one of the most well-known brands in all of Priorat. History René Barbier III was descended from a family of French winemakers although he was born in Tarragona and grew up in Catalonia. Coming with his wife Isabelle Meyer and their young children to the Priorat region, he found a promising wine region that had for years been neglected although excellent wines had sometimes appeared such as the seminal 1974 vintage from Cellers de Scala Dei. Priorat
Priorat () is a comarca (county) in Catalonia, Spain. The central part of the comarca, "Priorat històric," produces the highly regarded wines that are certified under the DOQ Priorat. Wines from elsewhere in the comarca are certified as DO Montsant although this region also has a small segment of the neighboring comarca, Ribera d'Ebre as well. However, galena mining was the main activity since prehistoric times until 1972, when the last galeana mine closed. The other main agricultural activity is the production of olives and olive oil, the latter of which is certified under DOP Siurana. Historically there was greater production of hazelnuts and almonds but these activities have become mostly for personal use. In late 1800s, a devastating attack of the insect phylloxera destroyed vines and mining kept activities and around twenty mines opened at that time. El Molar, Priorat
El Molar is a municipality in the comarca of Priorat, Tarragona Province, Catalonia, Spain. Most of the local economy is based on vineyards, as well as almond and olive tree plantations. History Remnants of two ancient villages, the oldest from the 6th or 7th century, are within the El Molar municipal term. The present village dates from the 13th century after the area had been reconquered from the saracens. During medieval times the town was part of the Barony of Entença. According to an 1156 document by which Ramon Berenguer IV ceded the territory to the Poblet Monastery, El Molar was linked to neighboring Garcia town. This situation ended in the 19th century. El Molar was bombed by Condor Legion planes during the Spanish Civil War. An abandoned galena mine nearby was used as a field hospital during the Battle of the Ebro.
