Grantley, North Yorkshire
Grantley is a village (also known as High Grantley) and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It lies west of Ripon. The parish also includes the hamlet of Low Grantley. The population of the parish was estimated at 130 in 2013. The parish lies on the north bank of the River Skell, in a well-wooded valley. Grantley Sawmills is a local employer, just outside the parish on the south bank of the river. Grantley Hall, on the north bank of the river, is an 18th-century Grade II* listed building, built by Thomas Norton and his son Fletcher Norton, 1st Baron Grantley. The toponym, first mentioned in about 1030, is Old English, and means "clearing of a man called Grante". Grantley Hall
Grantley Hall is a Country house located in North Yorkshire, England. It is situated near Grantley, about to the west of Ripon, on the banks of the River Skell. It is listed Grade II* on the National Heritage List for England, and the Japanese garden at the hall is listed Grade II on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. The house was built by Thomas Norton and his son Fletcher Norton, 1st Baron Grantley in the mid-18th century, apparently based on a Palladian design by Isaac Ware. Additions in the 1760s have been attributed to John Carr, who knew Fletcher Norton. The house was extended during the 19th and early 20th centuries to form the house as it stands today. More recently the building was used as a convalescent home during World War II. Grantley Harbor
Grantley Harbor (native name, Kaviak) is a waterway located at the bay of Port Clarence, Alaska, on the Seward Peninsula in the U.S. state of Alaska. The inner harbor at the entrance to the northeast corner of the bay was named after Lord Grantley. History The area between Grantley Harbor, Port Clarence and Golovnin Bay was inhabited by the Kaveahrachamutes. The regional headquarters of the Russo-American Telegraph Expedition of 1865–67 were located on Grantley Harbor, while the headquarters of Teller Reindeer Station were established nearby in 1892 by Sheldon Jackson. Baron Grantley, of Markenfield, in the County of York is a title in the Peerage of Great Britain. It was created on 9 April 1782 for Sir Fletcher Norton, Attorney General from 1763 to 1765 and Speaker of the House of Commons from 1770 to 1780. His son, the second Baron, was also a politician and represented Richmond, Wigtown Burghs, Guildford and Surrey in Parliament. He was succeeded by his nephew, Fletcher Norton, the third Baron. Fletcher Norton, 1st Baron Grantley
Fletcher Norton, 1st Baron Grantley, PC (23 June 1716 – 1 January 1789) was an English lawyer and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1756 to 1782 when he was raised to the peerage as Baron Grantley. Life Norton was the eldest son of Thomas Norton of Grantley, Yorkshire. He was educated at St John's College, Cambridge and the Middle Temple, being called to the bar in 1739. After a period of inactivity, he built up a profitable practice, becoming a King's Counsel in 1754, and later attorney-general for the county palatine of Lancaster. With his father he ordered the building in the mid-1700s of Grantley Hall, near Ripon in North Yorkshire. In 1756 Norton was elected Member of Parliament for Appleby; he represented Wigan from 1761 to 1768, and was appointed solicitor-general for England and knighted in 1762. William Norton, 2nd Baron Grantley
William Norton, 2nd Baron Grantley (19 February 1742 – 12 November 1822) was a British politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1768 to 1789 when he succeeded to the peerage as Baron Grantley. Norton was the son of Fletcher Norton, 1st Baron Grantley, who was created a peer on 9 April 1782, from which time William Norton was styled 'the Honourable'. He was educated at St John's College, Cambridge. Norton was Member of Parliament for Richmond 1768–1774, for Wigtown Burghs 1774–1775 (unseated on petition), Richmond 1775–1780, Guildford 1782–1784 and Surrey 1784–1789. John Norton, 5th Baron Grantley
John Richard Brinsley Norton, 5th Baron Grantley, FSA, FRNS (1 October 1855 – 5 August 1943), was a British peer from an English landowning family. He became known also as an antiquary and a numismatist. Early life Norton was born in Florence, Italy, the son of Thomas Norton, 4th Baron Grantley and his wife, Maria, née Federigo, and a grandson of Caroline Norton, the writer. He was educated at Highgate School from 1867 until 1869, and then at Harrow School and the University of Dresden. He inherited his father's title in 1877 and was at some time a captain in the Middlesex Yeomanry. Estates Grantley was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, the Royal Numismatic Society and the British Numismatic Society. His country seats were Weeke Manor in Winchester and Markenfield Hall in Ripon. Richard William Brinsley Norton, 8th Baron Grantley (born 30 January 1956), is a retired banker and politician. In early life he worked for the Conservative Party, but joined the UK Independence Party (UKIP) when it was founded in 1993. As Richard Grantley, he was a member of the House of Lords from 1995 to 1999. Early life The son of John Norton, 7th Baron Grantley, Norton was born in 1956, and was the maternal grandson of William Hare, 5th Earl of Listowel.
