Grant Patterson
Grant Patterson (born 19 May 1989) is an Australian Paralympic swimmer. At the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, his second games, he won a silver and bronze medal. Personal Patterson was born on 19 May 1989 and is from Cairns, Queensland. He attended Redlynch State College, a state school in Redlynch. Patterson has Diastrophic dysplasia, a joint fusion disability connected to dwarfism. Other sports he competes in include Australian rules football, cricket and ice hockey. Patterson owes his nickname, "Scooter", to the non-motorised scooter which he uses to move around, including up to the edge of the pool during competitions. Swimming Patterson is an S3 classified swimmer. He is coached by Herbie Howard. Patterson started competitive swimming in 2007. S3 (classification)
S3, SB2, SM3 are disability swimming classifications used for categorising swimmers based on their level of disability. People in this class have decent arm and hand function, but no use of their trunk and legs. They have severe disabilities in all their limbs. Swimmers in this class have a variety of different disabilities including quadriplegia from spinal cord injury, severe cerebral palsy and multiple amputations. Events this class can participate in include 50m and 100m Freestyle, 200m Freestyle, 50m Backstroke, 50m Butterfly, 50m Breaststroke and 150m Individual Medley events. The World Para Swimming Championships, known before 30 November 2016 as the IPC Swimming World Championships, are the world championships for swimming where athletes with a disability compete. They are organised by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). Previously on a four-year rotation, the championships are now held biennially, a year after the regional championships and year prior to the Paralympic Games. Dwarfism is a condition wherein an organism is exceptionally small, and mostly occurs in the animal kingdom. In humans, it is sometimes defined as an adult height of less than , regardless of sex; the average adult height among people with dwarfism is , although some individuals with dwarfism are slightly taller. Diastrophic Dysplasia
Diastrophic dysplasia is an autosomal recessive dysplasia which affects cartilage and bone development. ("Diastrophism" is a general word referring to a twisting.) Diastrophic dysplasia is due to mutations in the ''SLC26A2'' gene. Affected individuals have short stature with very short arms and legs and joint problems that restrict mobility. Signs and symptoms This condition is also characterized by an unusual clubfoot with twisting of the metatarsals, inward- and upward-turning foot, tarsus varus and inversion adducted appearances. Furthermore, they classically present with scoliosis (progressive curvature of the spine) and unusually positioned thumbs (hitchhiker's thumbs).
