Grant Golden
Grant Golden (August 21, 1929 – December 15, 2018 in Chicago, Illinois) was an American amateur tennis player in the 1940s and 1950s. Golden was ranked in the U.S. top 10 in singles in 1953, 1956, and 1957, and was ranked # 2 in the U.S. in doubles in 1953. Early and personal life Golden, the son of Sophie and Abe Golden, was Jewish. His wife was Karyl (nee Gesmer) Golden. He was awarded the Commendation Ribbon with Metal Pendant for Meritorious Service, Far East Command, U.S. Army. Tennis career Golden played collegiate tennis from 1948 to 1951 at Northwestern University, where he was Big Ten Conference singles and doubles champion in 1950, and named an All American. William Quillian (athlete)
William Whitcomb "Bill" Quillian (April 13, 1934 – July 12, 1973) was an American tennis player and coach. Quillian joined the University of Washington in Seattle as an undergrad in 1952. He played tennis throughout his time there, participating in the U.S. championships in 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, and 1958. In 1958, he competed in Europe at the Wimbledon Championships and French Championships. Quillian played for the U.S. in the 1958 Davis Cup against Venezuela; at the quarterfinal of the Americas zone in Caracas in May, he won his doubles and singles match. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) is the national governing body for tennis in the United States. A not-for-profit organization with more than 700,000 members, it invests 100% of its proceeds to promote and develop the growth of tennis, from the grass-roots to the professional levels. Anita Kanter (born 1933) is a former amateur tennis player from the U.S. who played in the 1950s. In singles, Kanter was ranked # 6 in the United States (and # 10 in the world by ''World Tennis'' magazine) in 1952, and # 9 in the US in 1953. Early life Kanter was born in Santa Monica, California, and is Jewish. She attended Santa Monica High School. Tennis career Kanter won the 1949 US Girls National Hard Court Singles Championship. She won the US girls tennis championship in 1951 as an 18-year-old sophomore at the University of California-Los Angeles, as well as the 1951 National Hard Court Doubles and Mixed Doubles championships. Pablo Eisenberg
Pablo Samuel Eisenberg (July 1, 1932 – October 18, 2022) was an American scholar, social justice advocate, and tennis player. He played in Wimbledon five times, making the quarterfinals once, and won a gold medal at the 1953 Maccabiah Games in Israel. He was a Senior Fellow at Georgetown University's Public Policy Institute. Prior to his role at Georgetown, he served for 23 years as executive director of the Center for Community Change, a progressive community organizing group. Early life Eisenberg was born in Paris, France, on July 1, 1932, to a Jewish family. He came to the United States in 1939, when he was seven years old, and grew up in New Jersey. He was the godson of cellist Pablo Casals. Eisenberg lived in Maplewood, New Jersey, and attended Millburn High School, where he played tennis and basketball. Sydney Levy (17 October 1922 – 22 November 2015) was a South African tennis player. He competed at Wimbledon Championships, Wimbledon, the French Championships, the US Open (tennis), U.S. Open, and Davis Cup, and won a silver medal at the Maccabiah Games in Israel. Biography Levy attended the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, and won the university singles title in tennis in 1942. A gold medal is a medal awarded for highest achievement in a non-military field. Its name derives from the use of at least a fraction of gold in form of plating or alloying in its manufacture.
