Grand Place, Réunion
Grand Place is a village in the commune La Possession in the French overseas department of La Réunion, an island in the Indian Ocean. The hamlet (fr. îlet = little island) is situated in the Cirque de Mafate, a caldera of the Piton des Neiges volcano, which is part of the Réunion National Park. It is accessible only on foot or by helicopter. Village structure Grand Place is one of the settlements in the Mafate cirque with the largest surface area and stretches on a sloped plane that reaches from 520 m up to ~1000 m in the shadow of Piton Calumet (height 1616 m). Therefore it may be separated into three "districts": * Grand Place les Hauts, * Grand Place École, * Grand Place les Bas aka "Cayenne". La Possession
La Possession () is a commune in the French overseas department of Réunion. It is located on the northwest side of the island of Réunion, between the capital of Saint-Denis and the commune of Le Port. To the territory of this commune belongs the major part of the Cirque of Mafate, a caldera of the dormant Piton des Neiges volcano. It is part of the Réunion National Park. History The territory of the commune of La Possession belonged to the commune of Saint-Paul until 1895. In 1675 the first settlements were led by Jean Marquet (a creek was named for him). They have exactly the same status as mainland France's regions and departments. Mafate
The ''Cirque de Mafate'' is a caldera on Réunion Island (France; located in the Indian Ocean). It was formed from the collapse of the large shield volcano the ''Piton des Neiges''. The very remote and inaccessible cirque was settled in the 19th century by maroon slaves (i.e. slaves who had escaped from their masters), then later by poor white laborers. It owes its name to one maroon leader. Geography The cirque is entirely enclosed by mountains, especially tall cliffs, known as ''remparts'', save for the sole river exiting, the ''Rivière des Galets'' ("river of the pebbles"). Inside the cirque, there are considerable declivities. The ''îlets'' are pieces of more-or-less flat lands, on which the hamlets are located. Piton Des Neiges
The Piton des Neiges (Snow Peak) is a massive 3,069 m (10,069 ft) shield volcano on Réunion, one of the French volcanic islands in the Mascarene Archipelago in the southwestern Indian Ocean. It is located about east of Madagascar. Piton des Neiges is the highest point on Réunion and is considered to be the highest point in the Indian Ocean. The volcano was formed by the Réunion hotspot and emerged from the sea about two million years ago. Now deeply eroded, the volcano has been inactive for 20,000 years and is surrounded by three massive crater valleys, the Cirques. Réunion National Park (french: Parc national de La Réunion) is a National Park of France located on the island of Réunion, an overseas department in the western Indian Ocean. Established on 5 March 2007, the park protects the endemic ecosystems of ''Les Hauts'', Réunion's mountainous interior, and covers around 42% of the island.
