''Grand National'' is the debut extended play by British band, Courting. The EP was released on 9 April 2021 through Nice Swan Recordings. Critical reception ''Grand National'' received generally positive review from contemporary music critics. Alex Cabré, writing for '' DIY'' described the EP as "heavy-handed with their influences but endearing enough to get away with it." Cabré compared Courting heavily to compatriot band, Sports Team, saying that "frontman Sean Murphy-O’Neill is a pint-sized Alex Rice, a cavalier jabberer whose tone is an inch the right side of irritating as he rips into horse racing culture and Brexit Britain over an instrumental that should tick a few boxes for any Sports Team fan." Courting (band)
Courting is a British electronic rock band based in Liverpool. The group consists of lead vocalist Sean Murphy-O'Neill, drummer Sean Thomas, guitarist Joshua Cope and bassist Connor McCann. Since their formation in 2018, they have released one extended play, ''Grand National (EP), Grand National'' (2021), and two studio albums, ''Guitar Music (Courting album), Guitar Music'' in 2022 and ''New Last Name'' in 2024. History Formation The band formed in 2018 in Liverpool. Post-punk
Post-punk (originally called new musick) is a broad genre of punk music that emerged in the late 1970s as musicians departed from punk's traditional elements and raw simplicity, instead adopting a variety of avant-garde sensibilities and non-rock influences. Inspired by punk's energy and DIY ethic but determined to break from rock cliches, artists experimented with styles like funk, electronic music, jazz, and dance music; the production techniques of dub and disco; and ideas from art and politics, including critical theory, modernist art, cinema and literature. These communities produced independent record labels, visual art, multimedia performances and fanzines. Indie Rock
Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". One of the primary scenes of the movement was Dunedin, where Dunedin sound, a cultural scene based around a convergence of noise pop and jangle became popular among the city's University of Otago, large student population. Art punk is a subgenre of punk rock in which artists go beyond the genre's rudimentary garage rock and are considered more sophisticated than their peers. These groups still generated punk's aesthetic of being simple, offensive, and free-spirited, but essentially attracted audiences other than the angry, working-class ones that surrounded pub rock. ''Guitar Music'' is the debut studio album from British band Courting. It was released on 23 September 2022 by PIAS Recordings. The album combines the genres of art punk, post-punk, and hyperpop, and was produced by James Dring, with songwriting and recording taking place between late 2021 and early 2022. The album featured three promotional singles: "Tennis", "Loaded", and "Jumper". Despite mixed reviews for the singles, the album received generally favourable reviews from critics.
