The Grand Lodge of Illinois, officially The Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Illinois, is the premier masonic organization in the state of Illinois encompassing more than 460 lodges and 57,000 members at the end of 2018. History The first masonic lodge in the state of Illinois was formed in Kaskaskia. The members submitted a petition to the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania on 1805. A Masonic lodge, often termed a private lodge or constituent lodge, is the basic organisational unit of Freemasonry. It is also commonly used as a term for a building in which such a unit meets. Every new lodge must be warranted or chartered by a Grand Lodge, but is subject to its direction only in enforcing the published constitution of the jurisdiction. Kaskaskia, Illinois
Kaskaskia is a village in Randolph County, Illinois. Having been inhabited by indigenous peoples, it was settled by France as part of the Illinois Country. It was named for the Kaskaskia people. Its population peaked at about 7,000 in the 18th century, when it was a regional center. During the American Revolutionary War, the town, which by then had become an administrative center for the British Province of Quebec, was taken by the Virginia militia during the Illinois campaign. It was designated as the county seat of Illinois County, Virginia, after which it became part of the Northwest Territory in 1787. Kaskaskia was later named as the capital of the United States' Illinois Territory, created on February 3, 1809. Shadrach Bond
Shadrach Bond (November 24, 1773 – April 12, 1832) was a representative from the Illinois Territory to the United States Congress. In 1818, he was elected Governor of Illinois, becoming the new state's first chief executive. In an example of American politics during the Era of Good Feelings, Bond was elected to both positions without opposition. Early life Bond was born in 1773 in Frederick, Maryland. He had twelve Illinois Country connections through his uncle, also, named Shadrach Bond, a scout with George Rogers Clark's Illinois Regiment in the American Revolutionary War. Because they held some of the same offices in Illinois, the two Bonds are sometimes confused; the uncle is usually known as Shadrach Bond, Sr. The young Bond learned from his uncle of the rich farmland of the Illinois Territory, and emigrated to the American Bottom, an especially fertile section of the Mississippi River basin. Masonic Temple (Chicago)
The Masonic Temple Building was a skyscraper built in Chicago, Illinois in 1892, and from 1895 to the 1920s the tallest building in Chicago. History Designed by the firm of Burnham and Root and built at the corner of Randolph and State Streets, the building rose 21 stories. When the clock tower was removed from the 1885 Board of Trade Building in 1895, the Masonic Temple became the tallest in the city. The building was owned by Oriental Lodge #33 which still meets to this day. The building featured a central court ringed by nine floors of shops with offices above and meeting rooms for the Masons at the very top. These meeting rooms also served as theaters, which contributed to the building's obsolescence; its elevators proved inadequate for these crowds, and the building rapidly fell from favor with commercial tenants. Paul Revere Masonic Temple
The Paul Revere Masonic Temple was a Masonic Temple built in Chicago, Illinois in 1880 as a residential home, at 1521 West Wilson Avenue. In 1899 became the Ravenswood Women’s Club with an addition later., it was made out of wood, it was a two stories building, with a large front porch and a large lawn on the Ashland Avenue side. The building had 7 bedrooms, 2 meeting rooms, reception hall with dance floor and sitting room, also billiards and bowling alley. In 1920 the Grand Templars of Illinois invited Paul Revere Lodge to join them in the ownership of the temple, and then after a few years they offered to sell it to Paul Revere Lodge. One unique feature was that the wooden window shutters all had the Square and Compasses cut in them. Jefferson Masonic Temple is a building completed in 1913 in Jefferson Park, it provides a meeting space for Masonic Lodges and appendant bodies in the 5th Northeastern District of the Grand Lodge Of IllinoisOriental Lodge #33 Hesperia #411, King Oscar Lodge #855, Paul Revere Lodge #998, and Kelvyn Park-Willing Lodge #1075.
