Grand Lake Lodge
The Grand Lake Lodge hotel was opened in 1920 to serve tourists visiting Rocky Mountain National Park via the Trail Ridge Road, completed the same year. Located in Grand Lake, Colorado, the rustic lodge was founded by Frank Huntington and Roe Emery on land owned by the National Park Service at the edge of the park. The resort was affiliated with the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad. A kitchen fire in 1973 closed the lodge for the next seven seasons. After extensive reconstruction and refurnishing, the lodge reopened in 1981. The lodge and its historic district comprise more than 100 structures, including several smaller lodges and many rustic cabins. In 2018, Highway West Vacations purchased the Grand Lake Lodge and began a complete renovation to all the guest cabins, hotel lobby, restaurant and bar. The Town of Grand Lake is a statutory town located in Grand County, Colorado, United States. The town population was 410 at the 2020 United States Census. History Established in 1881, Grand Lake sits at an elevation of and derives its name from the lake on whose shores it is situated: Grand Lake, the largest natural body of water in Colorado. The town of Grand Lake was originally an outfitting and supply point for the mining settlements of Lulu City, Teller City, and Gaskill, but today is a tourist destination adjacent to the western entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park, which surrounds the lake and the town on three sides. Rocky Mountain National Park
Rocky Mountain National Park is an American national park located approximately northwest of Denver in north-central Colorado, within the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Trail Ridge Road
Trail Ridge Road is the name for the stretch of U.S. Highway 34 that traverses Rocky Mountain National Park from Estes Park, Colorado in the east to Grand Lake, Colorado in the west. Together with the connecting Beaver Meadow Road (U.S. Highway 36), Trail Ridge Road forms the Trail Ridge Road/Beaver Meadow National Scenic Byway, an All-American Road. With a high point at elevation, Trail Ridge Road is the highest continuous paved road in North America. The higher portion of Trail Ridge Road is closed from October to May. National Park Service rustic – sometimes colloquially called Parkitecture – is a style of architecture that developed in the early and middle 20th century in the United States National Park Service (NPS) through its efforts to create buildings that harmonized with the natural environment. Since its founding in 1916, the NPS sought to design and build visitor facilities without visually interrupting the natural or historic surroundings. Roe Emery
Lereaux William Emery (October 31, 1874 – February 4, 1953) was an American businessman who owned many transportation companies and lodges, and expanded tourism into the National Parks. Roe Emery was known as "the Father of Colorado Tourism". Emery raised sheep in White Sulfur Springs, Montana. In 1914, he was one of two principals of the Glacier National Park tour buses called Red Jammers, the first authorized motor vehicles in the National Park system. The Grand Lake Lodge, built in 1920, was purchased by Emery in 1923 and was the start of lodging acquisitions, becoming a stop on his Rocky Mountains Circle Tours. He owned The Stanley Hotel from 1930 to 1946. Emery was president of the National Western Stock Show. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad was a railroad that operated in the Midwestern United States. Commonly referred to as the Burlington Route, the Burlington, or as the Q, it operated extensive trackage in the states of Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and also in Texas through subsidiaries Colorado and Southern Railway, Fort Worth and Denver Railway, and Burlington-Rock Island Railroad.
