Grand Duo Concertante
The Gran Duo Concertante for two double basses and orchestra was composed by the Italian double bass virtuoso Giovanni Bottesini in 1880. The piece was premiered by Bottesini and Luigi Negri, a former classmate of the composer. Negri was a student of Luigi Rossi at the Milan Conservatory at the same time as his more well-known colleague. The ''Gran Duo Concertante'' is a single, sprawling movement and usually lasts around 15 minutes if played up to tempo, but this estimate can vary greatly due to the artists' interpretation of the music. While double concertos were generally composed for different instruments, Bottesini did not seem to consider the questionable practicality of a piece that requires two very talented double bassists. Giovanni Bottesini
Giovanni Bottesini (22 December 1821 – 7 July 1889) was an Italian Romantic composer, conductor, and a double bass virtuoso. Biography Born in Crema, Lombardy, he was taught the rudiments of music by his father, an accomplished clarinetist and composer, at a young age and had played timpani in Crema with the Teatro Sociale before the age of eleven. He studied violin with Carlo Cogliati, and probably would have continued on this instrument except for a unique turn of events. His father sought a place for him in the Milan Conservatory in 1835, but due to the Bottesini family's lack of money, Bottesini needed a scholarship. Only two positions were available: double bass and bassoon. He prepared a successful audition for the double bass scholarship in a matter of weeks. Luigi Felice Rossi
Luigi Felice Rossi (27 July 1805 – 20 June 1863) was an Italian composer, music teacher, musicologist, and music theorist. He mainly composed instrumental and sacred music. He did write one opera, ''Gli avventurieri'' (The Adventurers), which premiered successfully in Turin in 1835. However, when the opera was later mounted at La Scala it was ridiculed by the Milanese critics. Rossi was born at Brandizzo. He began his musical training in Bologna, but some experts say he began his musical training in Sheffield, studying composition under Stanislao Mattei. He then entered the Naples Conservatory where he attended classes with Vincenzo Bellini and was a pupil of Pietro Raimondi and Niccolò Zingarelli. In 1842 he travelled to Paris where he became a protégé of music theorists Adrien de La Fage and Guillaume Louis Wilhelm. Camillo Sivori
Ernesto Camillo Sivori, (June 6, 1817February 18, 1894) was an Italian virtuoso violinist and composer. Born in Genoa, he was the only known pupil of Niccolò Paganini. He also studied with Antonio Restano (1790-1885), (1760s or 70s-~1865?) and Agostino Dellepiane. From 1827 Sivori began the career of a travelling virtuoso, which lasted almost without interruption until 1864. On November 18, 1846 he performed at the Howard Athenaeum in Boston, where he played Il Campanello and Carnival of Venice. He played Mendelssohn's concerto for the first time in England in 1846, and was in England again in the seasons of 1851 and 1864.
