Grand Central LIRR Terminal
Grand Central Madison is a commuter rail terminal for the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) in the Midtown East neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. Part of the East Side Access project, the new terminal started construction in 2008 and is to open in December 2022. Sometimes called the LIRR's East Side station, it sits beneath Grand Central Terminal, which serves the MTA's Metro-North Railroad. Grand Central Madison was built to reduce travel times to and from Manhattan's east side and to ease congestion at Penn Station, the west side station where the LIRR has terminated since 1910. The new terminal will enable passengers to transfer to the Metro-North Railroad's Harlem, Hudson, and New Haven Lines and the New York City Subway at Grand Central–42nd Street station. Main Line (Long Island Rail Road)
The Main Line is a rail line owned and operated by the Long Island Rail Road in the U.S. state of New York. It begins as a two-track line at the Long Island City station in Long Island City, Queens, and runs along the middle of Long Island about 95 miles (153 km) to the Greenport station in Greenport, Suffolk County. A mile east of the Long Island City station (east of Hunterspoint Avenue), the four tracks of the East River Tunnels join the two tracks from Long Island City; most Main Line trains use these tunnels rather than running to or from Long Island City. Continuing east, five branches split from the Main Line. MTA Capital Construction
MTA Construction and Development Company is a subsidiary of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), formed in July 2003 as MTA Capital Construction Company to manage the MTA's major capital projects in the New York metropolitan area. It mainly focuses on improving transportation infrastructure and facilities in New York City, the Hudson Valley, and Long Island areas. 63rd Street Tunnel
The 63rd Street Tunnel is a double-deck subway and railroad tunnel under the East River between the boroughs of Manhattan and Queens in New York City. Opened in 1989, it is the newest of the East River tunnels, as well as the newest rail river crossing in the New York metropolitan area. C3 (railcar)
The C3 is a bi-level coach railroad car built by Kawasaki. These cars began delivery in 1997, ordered by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority for the Long Island Rail Road. The rail cars are pulled and pushed by EMD DE30AC and DM30AC over both electrified and non-electrified territory. The C3 cars are powered by 480 V AC Head End Power (HEP) supplied from the locomotive. There are three types of C3 cars: cab car with toilet (C Car), trailer car (T Car), and trailer car with toilet (TT car). The C car is normally at the opposite end of a consist from the locomotive. The cars are connected to one another by a standard mechanical H type tightlock coupling, which is used across the board on all modern passenger equipment. Port Jefferson Station (LIRR)
Port Jefferson is the terminus for the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. The station is located on New York State Route 25A (Main Street), on the north side of the tracks, but is also accessible from Oakland Avenue (both of which are in the Village of Port Jefferson), as well as Railroad Avenue and Union Street on the south side of the tracks in Port Jefferson Station. All service is diesel-only, and most off-peak trains are shuttles requiring a transfer to an electric train at Huntington or Hicksville. The station also serves Suffolk County Transit buses and occasionally the Village of Port Jefferson's own local jitney buses. One Suffolk County Transit bus, (Route S61) leads to the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Ferry, approximately one mile to the north. Oyster Bay Station
Oyster Bay is the terminus on the Oyster Bay Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. The station is located off Shore Avenue between Maxwell and Larabee Avenues. It is a sheltered concrete elevated platform that stands in the shadows of the original station, which was accessible from the ends of Maxwell, Audrey, and Hamilton Avenues. Both stations exist along the south side of Roosevelt Park. The original Oyster Bay station opened on June 24, 1889 and remodeled in 1902. At one point there were plans to extend the line east towards the Port Jefferson Branch. There was also a large pier built to facilitate the loading of passenger cars onto a short-lived ferry to Wilson's Point in South Norwalk, Connecticut that is now owned by the Flowers Oyster Company. The Metro-North Railroad New Haven Line is a commuter rail line running from New Haven, Connecticut to New York City. It joins the Harlem Line at Mount Vernon, New York and continues south to Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan.
