The ''Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana'' (in English: the ''Great Catalan Encyclopedia'') is a Catalan-language encyclopedia, started in fascicles, and published in 1968 by . The soul of the work was written by Max Cahner, and the first director was Jordi Carbonell. From the second volume the work had its own publisher: Enciclopedia Catalana SA with Jordi Pujol, and the new director was . Overview The encyclopedia collects alphabetical entries about different subjects: history, geography, cultural studies, etc. It includes worldwide views as well as, when appropriate, Catalan viewpoints and information (meaning that the work is very thorough and often written with first hand information). Catalan Language
Catalan (; autonym: , ), known in the Valencian Community and Carche as ''Valencian'' (autonym: ), is a Western Romance language. It is the official language of Andorra, and an official language of three autonomous communities in eastern Spain: Catalonia, the Valencian Community, and the Balearic Islands. It also has semi-official status in the Italian comune of Alghero. Max Cahner
Max Cahner i Garcia (3 December 1936 – 14 October 2013) was a Catalan politician, and editor and historian of Catalan literature. Career Cahner was born in Bad Godesberg, now a municipal district of Bonn, Germany, to a Jewish-Catalan father and a Catalan mother who had left during the Spanish Civil War. The Cahner family moved to Galicia in 1937 to avoid persecution from the rise of National Socialism, and then to Barcelona in 1939. He enrolled at the University of Barcelona in 1952 studying chemistry. Via Ramon Bastardes, Cahner was introduced to and began working on ''Serra d'Or'', an influential Catalan magazine published by Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey. In 1964, he was expelled from Francoist Spain for his Catalan nationalist activity. From exile he continued he work on Catalan literature. Jordi Carbonell
Jordi Carbonell i de Ballester (; 23 April 1924 – 22 August 2016) was a Spanish politician from Catalonia. A graduate in Romance philology from the University of Barcelona, Carbonell was a professor in Catalan Language at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, from which he was expelled in 1972 for political reasons. He was a professor at the University of Cagliari ( Casteddu, Sardinia) and a lecturer in Catalan at the University of Liverpool. A founding member of the Society for Catalan Historical Studies (Societat Catalana d’Estudis Històrics), a branch of the Institute for Catalan Studies''Institut d'Estudis Catalans'', he directed the Great Catalan Encyclopaedia from 1965 to 1971. Jordi Pujol
Jordi Pujol Soley (, born 9 June 1930) is a Catalan politician who was the leader of the party Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya (CDC) from 1974 to 2003, and President of the Generalitat de Catalunya from 1980 to 2003. Early life Pujol was born in Barcelona, studied at the German School of Barcelona and received a medical degree from the University of Barcelona. During his college years, he joined different activist groups that were seeking to rebuild the ideal Catalonia that the Spanish Civil War and Franco's dictatorship had undermined.
