Epinephelinae
Groupers are fish of any of a number of genera in the subfamily Epinephelinae of the family Serranidae, in the order Perciformes. Not all serranids are called "groupers"; the family also includes the sea basses. The common name "grouper" is usually given to fish in one of two large genera: ''Epinephelus'' and ''Mycteroperca''. In addition, the species classified in the small genera ''Anyperidon'', ''Cromileptes'', ''Dermatolepis'', ''Graciela'', ''Saloptia'', and ''Triso'' are also called "groupers." Fish in the genus ''Plectropomus'' are referred to as "coral groupers." These genera are all classified in the subfamily Epiphelinae. However, some of the hamlets (genus ''Alphestes''), the hinds (genus ''Cephalopholis''), the lyretails (genus ''Variola''), and some other small genera (''Gonioplectrus'', ''Niphon'', ''Paranthias'') are also in this subfamily, and occasional species in other serranid genera have common names involving the word "grouper." Nonetheless, the word "grou ...

Jeboehlkia
''Jeboehlkia'' is a monotypic genus of marine ray-finned fish, related to the groupers and classified within the subfamily Epinephelinae of the family Serranidae. It is a species of relatively deep water which is found in the western Atlantic Ocean. The only species in the genus is ''Jeboehlkia gladifer'', the bladefin bass. Description ''Jeboehlkia gladifer'' has a moderately elongate and compressed body with a largeeye and pointed snout with a quite large mouth which is slightly oblique and has a projecting lower jaw . The posterior edge of the preopercle has fine serrations and there are three spines on the lower edge which point forwards and three rearward pointing spines on the gill cover, with the middle spine being the longest. The dorsal fin contains eight spines, although the first of these is tiny and hidden and the second is long and blade like, and 9 soft rays. The membranes between the spines and soft rays have deep incisions. The anal fin has three spines and seve ...

Grammistes Sexlineatus
The goldenstriped soapfish (''Grammistes sexlineatus''), also known as the lined soapfish, golden-striped bass, radio fish, sixline soapfish, six-lined perch or white-lined rock cod, is a species of marine ray-finned fish, related to the groupers and classified within the subfamily Epinephelinae of the family Serranidae. It has a wide Indo-Pacific distribution. Description ''Grammistes sexlineatus'' is a middle sized fish, which can grow to a maximum length of 30 cm. Its background body color is dark brown with a maximum of six white to yellow horizontal lines. The number of lines depends on the maturity of the fish. Juveniles have white to yellow dots on a dark background until an approximate size of 17.5 mm. Thereafter, the points gradually become lines. At a length of 5 cm, these soap fish have three horizontal lines. Only from 8 cm long that the soapfish gets the six distinctive horizontal lines. Note that in adult specimens close to the maximum size, th ...

Aporops
The blotched podge (''Aporops bilinearis'') is a species of marine ray-finned fish, related to the groupers and classified within the subfamily Epinephelinae of the family Serranidae. It is found in shallow water in reefs and it is a solitary and rather cryptic species. It is found at depths between from the eastern coast of Africa through the Indian Ocean east into the Pacific Ocean where its range extends as far as Johnston Atoll, Hawaii, the Line Islands and the Marquesas Islands The Marquesas Islands (; french: Îles Marquises or ' or '; Marquesan: ' ( North Marquesan) and ' ( South Marquesan), both meaning "the land of men") are a group of volcanic islands in French Polynesia, an overseas collectivity of France in ..., north to Japan and south to Australia. Rypticus
''Rypticus'' is a genus of marine ray-finned fish, related to the groupers and classified within the subfamily Epinephelinae of the family Serranidae. It is one of several genera of soapfishes. These fish live in the Atlantic and eastern Pacific Oceans in tropical and warmer temperate zones.Guimarães, R. Z. P. (1999)Revision, phylogeny and comments on biogeography of soapfishes of the genus ''Rypticus'' (Teleostei: Serranidae).''Bulletin of Marine Science'' 65(2) 337-79. Description The genus can be distinguished from the rest of the Serranidae by a few morphological details, such as its lack of anal fin spines. It also has only two to four dorsal fin spines; other serranids have more. The mouth is large and the lower jaw protrudes. The coloration varies, but usually a brown stripe runs from the mouth to the front of the dorsal fin. Several species are distinctly spotted. '' R. bistrispinus'' has red-brown spots, '' R. bornoi'' and '' R. subbifrenatus'' have dark brown, rounded s ...

''Pogonoperca'' is a genus of marine ray-finned fish, related to the groupers and classified within the subfamily Epinephelinae of the family Serranidae. They are found in the Indo-Pacific region. Etymology The genus name ''Pogonoperca'' derives from the Greek ( meaning beard and meaning perch). Species Species within this genus include: * '' Pogonoperca ocellata'' Günther, 1859 (Indian soapfish) * '' Pogonoperca punctata'' (Valenciennes Valenciennes (, also , , ; nl, label=also Dutch, Valencijn; pcd, Valincyinnes or ; la, Valentianae) is a commune in the Nord department, Hauts-de-France, France. Grammistops
The ocellate soapfish (''Grammistops ocellatus'') is a species of marine ray-finned fish with a wide Indo-Pacific distribution. It is the only species in the genus ''Grammistops''. It is also known as the ocellated soapfish, ocellated podge, or false-eyed soapfish. The specific name ''ocellatus'' refers to the ocellate (eye-like) spot on the operculum (gill covering). Taxonomy ''Grammistops ocellatus'' was first formally described in 1953 by the American ichthyologist Leonard Peter Schultz (1901–1986) with the type locality given as the Lagoon at Arji Island, Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. It is related to the groupers, and like them this species is classified within the subfamily Epinephelinae of the family Serranidae. It is often considered part of a separate subfamily, Grammistinae (the soapfishes). , it is the only species in the genus ''Grammistops''. Serranidae
The Serranidae are a large family of fishes belonging to the order Perciformes. The family contains about 450 species in 65 genera, including the sea basses and the groupers (subfamily Epinephelinae). Although many species are small, in some cases less than , the giant grouper (''Epinephelus lanceolatus'') is one of the largest bony fishes in the world, growing to in length and in weight. Representatives of this group live in tropical and subtropical seas worldwide. Characteristics Many serranid species are brightly colored, and many of the larger species are caught commercially for food. They are usually found over reefs, in tropical to subtropical waters along the coasts. Serranids are generally robust in form, with large mouths and small spines on the gill coverings. They typically have several rows of sharp teeth, usually with a pair of particularly large, canine-like teeth projecting from the lower jaw. All serranids are carnivorous. Although some species, especially i ...
