Graiguecullen Gaelic Footballers
Graiguecullen GFC are a Gaelic Athletic Association club from County Laois, Ireland. The club played in Carlow for many years but in 1926 they were suspended. The club then chose to play in Laois and have been doing so ever since. The club were winners of thirteen Carlow Senior Football Championship titles (the last of which was in 1925) and twelve Laois Senior Football Championship titles, the last of which was in 1965. The club won the Laois Intermediate Football Championship in 2007 in their first attempt to bounce straight back up to senior football, after being relegated for the first time in the club's history in 2006. The club have produced a number of Laois inter-county football players, including Tommy Murphy, Mick Haughney, and Mark Timmons. County Laois ( ; gle, Contae Laoise) is a county in Ireland. It is part of the Eastern and Midland Region and in the province of Leinster. It was known as Queen's County from 1556 to 1922. The Carlow Senior Football Championship (currently also known for sponsorship reasons as the ''Michael Lyng Motors Carlow SFC''), is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by top-tier Carlow GAA clubs. The Carlow County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1889. Palatine are the title holders (2022) defeating Tinryland in the Final. History The Carlow Senior Club Football Championship began in 1889 when Ballon O'Gorman-Mahon's defeated Tullow Stars and Stripes by a very low scoreline of 1-01 to 0-00. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). Tommy Murphy (Gaelic Footballer)
Tommy Murphy (1920–1985) was a Gaelic footballer from County Laois. Biography Tommy Murphy was born in Graiguecullen, County Laois on 5 November 1920. He was educated in the nearby Knockbeg College in Carlow. Murphy played for the Laois Minors when he was just 15 and came to prominence in 1937 when he played his first senior championship match against Offaly. Despite being only a 16-year-old schoolboy, Murphy lined out against Kerry in the All-Ireland SFC semi-final that same year. During the late 1930s and 1940s Murphy was a household name all over Ireland. He won Leinster provincial medals in 1937, 1938, and 1946. In all Murphy won eight Laois Senior Football Championship medals and various Railway Cup medals for Leinster. His last game for Laois was against Wexford in the 1953 Championship and two years later he played the last game for his club, Graiguecullen. Mick Haughney
Mick Haughney was a Gaelic footballer from County Laois. Nicknamed "Cutchie", Haughney was a native of the Carlow border town of Graiguecullen. He played at corner forward when Laois won Leinster titles in 1936, 1937 and 1938, but captained the O’Moore County side from midfield to Leinster Senior Football Championship glory against Kildare in 1946. Laois did not win the Leinster Senior Football Championship again until 2003 when Mick O'Dwyer led them to victory. Haughney also won 10 Laois Senior Football Championship medals with Graiguecullen Graiguecullen GFC are a Gaelic Athletic Association club from County Laois, Ireland. Mark Timmons
Mark Timmons (born 10 May 1986) is a Gaelic footballer from County Laois. He has played up to and including senior level for his county. He usually plays in defence for Laois and in 2003 was an integral part of the Laois team that won the All-Ireland Minor Football Championship title for the first time since 1997. In 2004, he was part of the minor team which won the Leinster Minor Football Championship. In 2006 and 2007, Timmons was part of the Laois team that won two successive Leinster U21 Football Championship titles. The Laois Intermediate Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by mid-tier Laois GAA clubs. The Laois County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1907. The Heath are the title holders (2022) defeating Arles–Kilcruise in the Final. Format The Intermediate Championship has a 'back door' and operates similarly to the Senior Championship (and Junior Championship C only) by going for a straight knockout but the 'back door' is in place for anyone losing out.
