Graham Shannon
Hugh Graham Shannon (13 June 1869 – 17 October 1912) was a New Zealand rugby union player. Graham Shannon as he was commonly called was educated at Wellington College and later farmed in the Manawatu region. He played at Halfback and represented the Manawatu Rugby Union at provincial level from 1890 to 1894 and had a NZ trial in 1893. He played club rugby for Marton and Feilding. He was not an original selection but was called into the New Zealand national rugby union team on their 1893 tour of Australia due to the withdrawal of William Elliott and Charles Caradus. He played in six matches including one as a wing-forward. Rugby Southland
Rugby Southland (formerly the Southland Rugby Football Union) is the provincial rugby union who govern the Southland, New Zealand, Southland region of New Zealand. Their headquarters are at Rugby Park Stadium in Invercargill, which is also the home ground of the union's professional team, the Southland Stags who compete in the Mitre 10 Cup, Mitre 10 Cup Championship Division and challenge for the Ranfurly Shield. Despite their proud history, no Southland team has ever won the top division of the New Zealand National Provincial Championship since organised competition began in 1976. Highlanders (rugby Union)
The Highlanders (formerly the Otago Highlanders) is a New Zealand professional rugby union team based in Dunedin that compete in Super Rugby. The team was formed in 1996 to represent the lower South Island in the newly formed Super 12 competition, and includes the Otago, North Otago and Southland unions. The Highlanders take their name from the Scottish immigrants that helped found the Otago, North Otago, and Southland regions in the 1840s and 1850s. Their main ground through the 2011 Super Rugby season was Carisbrook in Dunedin, with home games occasionally being played in Invercargill and Queenstown. Clarke Dermody
Clarke Dermody (born 22 April 1980, in Invercargill) is a former New Zealand rugby union player who has gone on to coach professionally. Dermody was born in Invercargill, New Zealand, and attended Southland Boys' High School. Dermody's great great grandfather Graham Shannon played for New Zealand in 1893. Playing career Dermody played as a prop. He represented Woodlands in the Invercargill premier competition and was the second Woodlands player to have played for the All Blacks after Jimmy Cowan (All Black number 1046). They were later joined by Jamie Mackintosh (All Black 1081). Dermody played 44 games for the Highlanders in Super Rugby and 89 games for Southland in the National Provincial Championship and Air New Zealand Cup. In June 2006 he had two test appearances against Ireland, playing alongside Keven Mealamu and Carl Hayman, scoring a try in 2nd test. Seacliff, New Zealand
Seacliff is a small village located north of Dunedin in the Otago region of New Zealand's South Island. The village lies roughly halfway between the estuary of Blueskin Bay and the mouth of the Waikouaiti River at Karitane, on the eastern slopes of Kilmog hill. Coast Road, an old route north from Dunedin, and the South Island Main Trunk Railway pass through the village. History Seacliff is the site of the former Seacliff Lunatic Asylum a mental institution built in the late 19th century and, for many years, the nation's largest public building. The 1893 New Zealand tour rugby to Australia was the second tour by the New Zealand national rugby union team to Australia. Ten matches were played against regional and district sides, but no Test matches were played. It was the first tour arranged by New Zealand Rugby Football Union, which had been founded the previous year. The only previous New Zealand national team was the side that toured New South Wales in 1884. New Zealand National Rugby Union Team
The New Zealand national rugby union team, commonly known as the All Blacks ( mi, Ōpango), represents New Zealand in men's international rugby union, which is considered the country's national sport.
