GrafX2
GrafX2 is a bitmap graphics editor inspired by the Amiga programs Deluxe Paint and Brilliance. It is free software and distributed under the GPL-2.0-only license. History GrafX2 was an MS-DOS program developed by Sunset Design from 1996 to 2001 . It was distributed as freeware, and was one of the most used graphics editor in the demoscene. The development stopped due the lack of time of the developers. So they released the sourcecode under the GPL-2.0-only license. A Windows port was done by the Eclipse demogroup and presented at the State of the art party in 2004, but the sourcecode for this version does not seem to be available anywhere. In 2007, a project was started to port the sourcecode from the original MS-DOS version to the Simple DirectMedia Layer library. The goal was to provide a pixel art editing tool for Linux, but SDL also allowed easy ports to many other platforms, including Windows. Brilliance (graphics Editor)
''Brilliance'' is a bitmap graphics editor for the Amiga computer, published by Digital Creations in 1993. Although marketed as a single package, ''Brilliance'' in reality consisted of two separate (but near identical-looking) applications. One was a palette-based package also named ''Brilliance''. The other was a true-color package called ''TrueBrilliance''. The ''Brilliance'' package was one of the major rivals to ''Deluxe Paint'', the established "killer app" in Amiga bitmap graphics editing. At its launch, Brilliance attracted generally favorable reviews. One commonly noted point was ''TrueBrilliance'''s performance on Hold-and-Modify and true-color images, which was significantly faster than that of Deluxe Paint IV. The demoscene is an international computer art subculture focused on producing demos: self-contained, sometimes extremely small, computer programs that produce audiovisual presentations. Deluxe Paint
Deluxe Paint, often referred to as ''DPaint'', is a bitmap graphics editor created by Dan Silva for Electronic Arts and published for the then-new Amiga 1000 in November 1985. A series of updated versions followed, some of which were ported to other platforms. An MS-DOS release with support for the 256 color video graphics array, VGA standard became popular for creating pixel graphics in video games in the 1990s. Dan Silva previously worked on the ''Cut & Paste'' word processor (1984), also from Electronic Arts. History Deluxe Paint began as an in-house art development tool called Prism. Color cycling, also known as palette shifting, is a technique used in computer graphics in which colors are changed in order to give the impression of animation. This technique was mainly used in early computer games, as storing one image and changing its palette required less memory and processor power than storing the animation as several frames. Indexed Color
In computing, indexed color is a technique to manage digital images' colors in a limited fashion, in order to save computer memory and file storage, while speeding up display refresh and file transfers. It is a form of vector quantization compression. When an image is encoded in this way, color information is not directly carried by the image pixel data, but is stored in a separate piece of data called a color lookup table (CLUT) or palette: an array of color specifications. Every element in the array represents a color, indexed by its position within the array. Pixel aspect ratio (often abbreviated PAR) is a mathematical ratio that describes how the width of a pixel in a digital image compares to the height of that pixel. Most digital imaging systems display an image as a grid of tiny, square pixels. Mode X
Mode X is an alternative 256-color graphics display mode of the IBM VGA graphics hardware that was popularized by Michael Abrash. It was first published in July 1991 in ''Dr. Dobb's Journal'', and republished in chapters 47-49 of Abrash's ''Graphics Programming Black Book'' (now freely available online). The term "Mode X" was coined by Abrash. The primary advantage of Mode X is that it has square pixels: a resolution of 320×240 instead of the standard VGA Mode 13h which is 320×200.
