The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) is the non-profit membership association for periodontists-dental professionals specializing in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth and in the placement and maintenance of dental implants. The AAP was founded in 1914 by Drs. Gillette Hayden and Grace Rogers Spalding. In 1916 Gillette Hayden served as its first female president. Dr. Hayden graduated from the Ohio Medical University, which later became the Ohio State University College of Dentistry, in 1902. She was the third woman to graduate from the Ohio Medical University. Dr. Hayden was born on March 2, 1880, in Greenville, Florida, and died in 1929 in Columbus at age 49 at her home at 870 Franklin Avenue.
