Grace Hollander
Dame Grace Shellie Hollander (née Goldsmith, 25 March 1922 – 27 June 2016) was a New Zealand community leader. Biography Born in Christchurch on 25 March 1922, Grace Shellie Goldsmith was the daughter of post-World War I Jewish migrants to New Zealand, Dinah Goldsmith (née Vander Molen) and Leon Arundul Goldsmith. She was educated at Christchurch Girls' High School, and went on to study at Digby's Commercial College in Christchurch. During World War II, she served with the Voluntary Aid Detachment, and in 1947 she married Eber Hollander. Having previously studied accountancy and worked as a statistical officer for Hay's department store, Hollander took over the management of the family fashion business when her husband became ill. She later managed a chartered accountant's office. Christchurch ( ; mi, Ōtautahi) is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand and the seat of the Canterbury Region. The New Zealand Suffrage Centennial Medal 1993 was established by Royal Warrant on 1 July 1993. It was created to commemorate Women's suffrage in New Zealand and to recognize those New Zealand and Commonwealth citizens who had made a significant contribution to women's rights or women's issues in New Zealand. The medal was only awarded in 1993. Background Women's suffrage in New Zealand was achieved by the passage of the Electoral Act 1893 on 19 September 1893. To commemorate the centennial of that event the medal was created. The medal served to recognize New Zealanders and other Commonwealth citizens who had made a significant or recognisable contribution to the rights of women or to women's issues within New Zealand. The first Jewish settlers in New Zealand were Anglo-Jewish traders. Small numbers of Anglo-Jewish immigrants followed, some subsidized by a Jewish charity in London which had a mission of caring for the poor and orphaned young people in the community. These "subsidised" Jewish immigrants were also intended by their benefactors to be devout members of the fledgling Jewish community in Wellington, to which the respected English business leader Abraham Hort, Senior, was sent from London to organise along London religious lines. The 2009 Special Honours in New Zealand were announced in August 2009 as a result of the reinstatement of the appellations of "Sir" and "Dame" to the New Zealand Royal Honours System by passing Special Regulation 2009/90 ''Additional Statutes of The New Zealand Order of Merit'', a legally binding regulation with the force of law in New Zealand. The effect of the change was that individuals who had been appointed as Principal Companions or Distinguished Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit were given the option of accepting titular honours: Principal Companions could opt to become Knights or Dames Grand Companion, and Distinguished Companions could become Knights or Dames Companion. The New Zealand Order of Merit is an order of merit in the New Zealand royal honours system.
