Goygol District
Goygol District ( az, Göygöl rayonu) is one of the 66 districts of Azerbaijan. It is located in the west of the country and belongs to the Ganja-Dashkasan Economic Region. The district borders the districts of Goranboy, Kalbajar, Dashkasan, Shamkir, Samukh, and the city of Ganja. Its capital and largest city is Goygol. As of 2020, the district had a population of 64,600. History Formerly known as Khanlar, the region was renamed "Göygöl" after Lake Göygöl, the famous blue lake, by the decision of the Parliament of Azerbaijan on April 25, 2008. The administrative centre of the district, Goygol city was established in 1819 by German settlers who came from Kingdom of Württemberg and was called Helenendorf. Houses were built in German style, streets were laid down, a school, a kindergarten and a music school were established. Goygol ( az, Göygöl , known as Helenendorf before 1931, Yelenino in 1931–1938, Khanlar in 1938–2008) is a city, municipality and the capital of the Goygol District in northwestern Azerbaijan. It is around south of Azerbaijan's second-largest city, Ganja, Azerbaijan, Ganja. The city of Goygol has a population of 30.000. The municipality includes the city of Goygol and the village of Qızılqaya, Goygol, Qızılqaya. Göygöl (lake)
Göygöl () is a natural impounded lake in Azerbaijan. It is situated at the footsteps of Murovdag, not far from Ganja in the Goygol District. It is one of the largest lakes in Azerbaijan. The lake is 0.78 km2 and is 1553.3 metres above sea level. Its length from south to north is 2800 metres, and its maximum width is 800 metres. History Due to an earthquake which hit the area on 25 September 1139, parts of the Kapaz Mount collapsed and blocked the path of the Kürəkçay River. As a result of diversion of water flow, a lake with pure mountain water was created, hence the name given signifying the pureness of the water. The nearby city of Khanlar was renamed after the Göygöl Lake on 25 April 2008. The city founded as Helenendorf by first German settlers in Azerbaijan in 1819 and with considerable German minority until 1941 had been renamed to Khanlar in 1938. Göygöl National Park
Göygöl National Park ( az, Göygöl Milli Parkı) — is a national park of Azerbaijan. It was established in an area in Goygol Rayon administrative district on April 1, 2008 on the basis of the former "Goy Gol State Reserve" that was established in 1925 and which it superseded, on a surface area of . It was enlarged from of the former state reserve to its current surface area as a national park. The national park includes one of the most beautiful and cleanest lakes in Azerbaijan, Lake Göygöl. The reserve is intended to protect the natural ecosystem of the subalpine zones of the northern slopes of the Lesser Caucasus. During the Soviet era, it had been deprived of its reserve status, but was restored later.
