Gibson Gowland
Gibson Gowland (4 January 1877 – 9 September 1951) was an English film actor. Biography Gowland was born in Spennymoor, County Durham. He started work as a sailor and later became the mate on a ship. For several years from the age of 25 he went to South Africa, where he hunted for big game, prospected for diamonds and also organised a theatrical company in Johannesburg, and acted in it. He prospected in Canada, where he made his debut on the legitimate stage. Gowland went to the United States from Britain by way of Canada in 1913 where he met Beatrice Bird, also from Great Britain, whom he married. They moved to Hollywood, working as bit players. Lance Gowland (1935–2008) was an Australian LGBT rights activist, unionist, peace activist and Communist Party member. He was a member of the Campaign Against Moral Persecution (CAMP) and as one of the organisers drove the truck in the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. Peter Andrew Gowland (April 3, 1916 – March 17, 2010) was a famous American glamour photographer and actor. He was known for designing and building his own studio equipment and was active professionally for six decades with his business partner, Alice Beatrice Adams (''maiden''; 1920–2014), whom he married in 1941 and divorced in 1969. Career Gowland shot more than 1,000 magazine covers, mostly glamour shots of female models but also portraits of celebrities including Rock Hudson and Robert Wagner. His covers included ''Rolling Stone'', ''Playboy'', and ''Modern Photography''. He invented elite cameras and equipment that he used to shoot pinups and magazine covers. Ralph Gowland
Ralph Gowland (c. 1722–c. 1782) was a British soldier and politician who sat in the House of Commons at times between 1761 and 1780. Gowland was the son of Samuel Gowland, attorney, of Cook's Court, Lincoln's Inn and his wife Averil Skinner. He married Ann Darby, daughter of John Darby of Foots Cray, Kent on 25 July 1749 and lived at Little Eppleton County Durham. He was a major in the Durham Militia and served in the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) with Lord Darlington. Darlington put Gowland forward as candidate for City of Durham at the 1761 general election but he was unsuccessful. He stood again at the same constituency at by-election in December 1761. He was returned as Member of Parliament, but unseated on petition. He was the patriarch of the Gowland family in the Rio de la Plata, established in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of San Nicolás at the beginning of the 19th century. Anthony J Gowland, known as Tony Gowland (born 13 May 1945 in Hendon, London) is an English former competitive track cyclist, and a former six-day rider. He was a professional cyclist between 1968 and 1978. Gowland was a talented track rider as an amateur before turning professional for Carlton, a subsidiary of Raleigh. Turning professional allowed him to ride the London Six, often called the Skol Six, in 1968. He signed his contract, with organiser Ron Webb, in the office of ''Cycling Weekly'' in Fleet Street, London. In 1971 he came second in London and won in Montreal, with Gianni Motta of Italy. William Gowland
William Gowland FRAI (16 December 1842 – 9 June 1922) was an English mining engineer who carried out archaeological work at Stonehenge and in Japan. He has been called the "Father of Japanese Archaeology". Biography Gowland was born in Sunderland, County Durham, in northern England. He attended the Royal College of Chemistry and Royal School of Mines at South Kensington, specialising in metallurgy, and worked as a chemist and as a metallurgist at the Broughton Copper Company from 1870 to 1872. Sir Frederick Gowland Hopkins (20 June 1861 – 16 May 1947) was an English biochemist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1929, with Christiaan Eijkman, for the discovery of vitamins, even though Casimir Funk, a Polish biochemist, is widely credited with discovering vitamins.
