Muscat ( ar, محافظة مسقط) is a governorate of the Sultanate of Oman. Its provincial capital is Muscat City, which is the largest city and only metropolis of Oman. Muscat Governorate, commonly referred to as Muscat City, is the seat of government and contains Oman's first cruise and cargo port and oil port. Its population reached 1,288,330 as of May 2015. Governorates Of Oman
Oman is divided into eleven governorates (''muhafazah''), and has been since 28 October 2011. Each of the 11 governorates are divided into ''wilayat'' (provinces). Regions and governorates before 2011 Before 28 October 2011, Oman was divided into five regions (''mintaqah'') and four governorates (''muhafazah''). The governorates were Muscat, Dhofar, Buraimi and Musandam. Buraimi was created in October 2006 from parts of Ad Dhahirah Region. The regions are further subdivided into 61 wilayat. Muttrah
Muttrah, ( ar, مطرح) administratively a wilayah (province), is located in the Muscat Governorate of Oman. Before the discovery of oil in Oman, Muttrah was the center of commerce in Oman (Muscat). It is still a center of commerce as one of the largest sea ports of the region is located there. Other landmarks include Souq Muttrah, a traditional bazaar and Sour Al-Lawatiah, a small community of houses surrounded by an old wall. To the south lies Muscat District. Demographics Muttrah had an estimated population of about 8,000 people when diplomat Edmund Roberts visited in the early 1830s. The district population was 234,225 as of the 2016 Census, up from 200,578 in 2014, making it the most densely populated district in the nation. Al Batinah Region
Al-Bāţinah ( ar, ٱلْبَاطِنَة) was one of the regions ''( Mintaqat)'' of Oman. On 28 October 2011, Al-Batinah Region was split into Al Batinah North Governorate and Al Batinah South Governorate. The region occupied an important location on the coast of Gulf of Oman. It lay between Khatmat Malahah in the north and Ras al-Hamra in the south, and confined between Al Hajar Mountains in the west and the Gulf of Oman in the east. Most of Oman's population were in that region, because of the green plains between the Hajar Mountains and the sea. Al Batinah Region contained the largest number of provinces (''wilayat''), numbering twelve: Sohar, Ar Rustaq, Shinas, Liwa, Saham, Al-Khaburah, Suwayq, Nakhal, Wadi Al Maawil, Al Awabi, Al-Musannah, Barka. Ad Dakhiliyah ( ar, الداخلية, Ad-Dāḫilīyah, meaning: The Interior) is one of the governorates (''muhafazah'') of Oman with Nizwa town as the regional center. It was previously a region (''mintaqah''). It became a governorate on 28 October 2011. Ash-Sharqiyyah Region ( ar, ٱلْمِنْطَقَة ٱلشَّرْقِيَّة, Al-Minṭaqah Ash-Sharqiyyah, lit=The Eastern Region) was the eastern '' minṭaqah'' (region) of the Sultanate of Oman. The capital of Ash-Sharqiyyah is Sur. On 28 October 2011 Ash Sharqiyah Region was split into Ash Sharqiyah North Governorate and Ash Sharqiyah South Governorate. Seeb, Oman
Al-Seeb, As Seeb or As Sib ( ar, السيب) is a coastal fishing city, located several kilometres northwest of Muscat, in northeastern Oman. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 470,878. Qurayyat, Oman
Qurayyat is a small fishing town 83 km southeast of Muscat, Oman, adjacent to the towns of Sur, Diman Wa Tayeen and Aamerat. A popular stopping point on the way to Sur, Qurayyat is in itself also a very popular destination for Muscat. Old Muscat
Old Muscat is the original historic city of Muscat, the capital of Oman, on the coast in the Gulf of Oman. Overview The old city of Muscat is separated from the rest of modern Muscat by coastal mountains. It is located along the Muttrah Corniche coastal road (entering via the Muscat Gate Museum) between Port Sultan Qaboos and Al Bustan Beach. The city is protected by a wall with round towers, built in 1625, on the western and southern sides. The Gulf of Oman and the surrounding mountains form a natural boundary to the east and north. Until the mid-20th century, the gates were closed three hours after dusk. Anyone on the streets after this time had to carry a lantern with them. Bawshar
Bawshar ( ar, بوشر ''Bawšar'') is one of the wilayats of Muscat, in northeastern Oman. The province borders wilayat Muttrah in the east and Muscat International Airport in the west, it overlooks the Sea of Oman from the north. It contains several archaeological sites and the Qurm Nature Reserve Ramsar site. Al Amarat
Al ‘Āmrāt ( ar, العامرات) or Al Amirat is a city in Muscat, in northeastern Oman. Al Amarat is the fifth (out of six) most populated province in the Muscat Governorate after Muscat itself, As Seeb, Bawshar and Muttrah. Al Amarat is categorized as a Wilayat with its own Wali (Mayor) office, municipality, police station, and government offices.
