Governor Leslie Jensen House
The Governor Leslie Jensen House, at 309 S. Fifth St. in Hot Springs, South Dakota, was built in 1899 for Christian Jensen, and it was the longtime home of Christian's son and South Dakota's 15th governor Leslie Jensen (1892–1964). It is a "simplified vernacular Queen Anne cottage built of brick, with some decorative Stick Style and Eastlake details. Also known as The Jensen House or the Christian Jensen House, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. Hot Springs (Lakota: ''mni kȟáta''; "hot water") is a city in and county seat of Fall River County, South Dakota, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 3,395. In addition, neighboring Oglala Lakota County contracts the duties of Auditor, Treasurer and Register of Deeds to the Fall River County authority in Hot Springs. Geography Hot Springs is located at , in Fall River County at the southern edge of South Dakota's Black Hills. The Fall River runs through the city. Leslie Jensen
Leslie Jensen (September 15, 1892 – December 14, 1964) was an American businessman and politician who served as the 15th Governor of South Dakota. Early life and military career Leslie Jensen was born in Hot Springs, South Dakota. In 1916 and 1917, he was a Second Lieutenant in the South Dakota National Guard 4th Infantry Regiment during the 1916 Mexican border expedition. From 1917 to 1919 he was a Captain in the 147th Artillery Regiment with the American Expeditionary Forces. He received an LL.B. degree from the University of South Dakota School of Law in 1921. He married Elizabeth Ward and they had three children. Career From 1922 until 1934 Jensen was a collector for the Internal Revenue Service. He became president and general manager of the People's Telephone and Telegraph Company. In 1936, Jensen, a Republican, defeated incumbent Governor Tom Berry as South Dakota Governor. The Eastlake movement was a nineteenth-century architectural and household design reform movement started by British architect and writer Charles Eastlake (1836–1906). The movement is generally considered part of the late Victorian period in terms of broad antique furniture designations. In architecture the Eastlake style or Eastlake architecture is part of the Queen Anne style of Victorian architecture. Eastlake's book ''Hints on Household Taste in Furniture, Upholstery, and Other Details'' posited that furniture and decor in people's homes should be made by hand or machine workers who took personal pride in their work.
