Gould House (Skowhegan, Maine)
The Gould House is a historic house at 31 Elm Street in Skowhegan, Maine. Built in 1887 by a prominent local lawyer and businessman, it is one of the finest examples of Queen Anne architecture in the interior of Maine. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Description and history The Gould House is set facing south on the north side of Elm Street, overlooking the Kennebec River. It is stories in height, fashioned with brick and frame construction. The first floor and foundation are brick, and the upper floors are finished in decorative shingle siding. The asymmetrical massing is typical of the Queen Style, with an elaborately decorated single-story porch that curves around to the west side, and several different sizes and shapes of gables and projections from its roof. Samuel Gould House
The Samuel Gould House is a historic house at 48 Meriam Street in Wakefield, Massachusetts. Built c. 1735, it is one of the oldest houses in Wakefield, and its only surviving period -story gambrel-roofed house. It was built by Samuel Gould, whose family came to the area in the late 17th century. It has had modest later alterations, including a Greek Revival door surround dating to the 1830s-1850s, a porch, and the second story gable dormers. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Skowhegan () is the county seat of Somerset County, Maine. As of the 2020 census, the town population was 8,620. Every August, Skowhegan hosts the annual Skowhegan State Fair, the oldest continuously-held state fair in the United States. Skowhegan was originally inhabited by the indigenous Abenaki people who named the area Skowhegan, meaning "watching place or fish" and were mostly dispersed by the end of the 4th Anglo-Abenaki War. Queen Anne Style Architecture In The United States
Queen Anne style architecture was one of a number of popular Victorian architectural styles that emerged in the United States during the period from roughly 1880 to 1910. Popular there during this time, it followed the Second Empire and Stick styles and preceded the Richardsonian Romanesque and Shingle styles. Sub-movements of Queen Anne include the Eastlake movement. The style bears almost no relationship to the original Queen Anne style architecture in Britain (a toned-down version of English Baroque that was used mostly for gentry houses) which appeared during the time of Queen Anne, who reigned from 1702 to 1714, nor of Queen Anne Revival (which appeared in the latter 19th century there). The American style covers a wide range of picturesque buildings with "free Renaissance" (non-Gothic Revival) details, rather than being a specific formulaic style in its own right. Samuel Wadsworth Gould
Samuel Wadsworth Gould (January 1, 1852 – December 19, 1935) was a United States representative from Maine. He was born in Porter. He moved with his parents to Hiram, and attended the public schools and North Parsonsfield Seminary. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1877. Gould studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Skowhegan in 1879. He served as postmaster of Skowhegan 1896–1900. Gould attended all Democratic State conventions for more than forty years, served as secretary of the Maine Democratic State Committee 1882–1890. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in 1900, 1908, and 1912. He unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Maine in 1902 and for election to the Sixty-first Congress in 1908.
