Gossia Bidwillii
''Gossia bidwillii'', known as the python tree is a rainforest Myrtaceae, myrtle of eastern Australia.The usual habitat is the drier rainforest areas. The range of natural distribution is from the Hunter River (New South Wales), Hunter River (32° S) in New South Wales to Coen, Queensland, Coen (13° S) in far northern Queensland. Other common names include lignum-vitae, scrub ironwood and smooth-barked ironwood. Description A medium-sized tree, usually around 18 to 25 metres tall and up to 20 cm in trunk diameter. The trunk is crooked and not cylindrical, the bark being smooth and orange/brown in colour with attractive green blotchy markings. Hence the common name of Python Tree. The bark sheds in thin papery flakes. Branchlets are smooth and brown. The leaves are opposite, simple and not toothed, being 5 to 8 cm long. ''Gossia gonoclada'', known as the square-stemmed or angle-stemmed myrtle for the distinctive four raised corners on the angled branchlets, is a rainforest tree of the family Myrtaceae, native to south-east Queensland, Australia. It is an endangered species. Etymology The genus ''Gossia'' is named after former Queensland Premier, Wayne Goss. The specific epithet ''gonoclada'' means "angle-stemmed". History The tree was first discovered by Charles Stuart in Moggill in the 1850s. Thought to be extinct for nearly a century, it was rediscovered by Glenn Leiper and Janet Hauser in December 1986, and the ''Gossia gonoclada'' Recovery Team was established by the Logan City Council in December 1995. ''Gossia fragrantissima'', the sweet myrtle or small-leaved myrtle, is a shrub or small tree of eastern Australia. A plant with a ROTAP rating of 3EC-, endangered by extinction. Found in sub tropical rainforests near streams, from near Woodburn, New South Wales to Nambour in south eastern Queensland. It features fragrant flowers, hence the specific epithet ''fragrantissima''. White flowers grow from October to February. The sweet myrtle may grow to seven metres tall. Bark is rough, fawn brown in colour, often flaking off in small particles. The berry matures in January and February, globular in shape, 4 to 6 mm in diameter.
