Gornal, West Midlands
Gornal is a suburban area and electoral ward of the Dudley Metropolitan Borough, in the West Midlands county in England. It encompasses three historic villages: Upper Gornal, Lower Gornal, and Gornal Wood. Gornal was formerly part of Staffordshire, prior to the creation of the West Midlands in 1974. It now falls under the town of Dudley and uses the DY postcode. Gornal is roughly 11 miles outside of Birmingham. The three Gornal villages were originally a part of the ancient manor of Sedgley until 1894, when the area became part of Sedgley Urban District. In 1966, along with most of the rest of Sedgley, it was merged into the County Borough of Dudley. Since 1974, it has been part of the larger Metropolitan Borough of Dudley. The 2013–14 Midland Football Alliance season was the 20th and final in the history of Midland Football Alliance, a football competition in England. Gary Bell (footballer)
Gary Bell (born 4 April 1947) is an English former professional footballer. During his career, he made over 350 appearances in The Football League most notably with Cardiff City where he spent eight years, helping the side to seven Welsh Cup victories. He later played for Hereford United, Newport County and Gloucester City. Career Early career Born in Stourbridge, Bell supported West Bromwich Albion as a child and spent time on trial with the club at the age of 15, having previously played reserve team football for Halesowen Town as a left winger in the Worcestershire Combination League. West Brom manager Jimmy Hagan offered Bell an amateur deal at The Hawthorns but he never played a senior match for the club. George Andrews (footballer)
George Andrews (born 23 April 1942) is an English former professional footballer. During his career, he made over 400 appearances in the Football League and scored 149 goals in spells at Cardiff City, Southport, Shrewsbury Town and Walsall. He scored Walsall's winning goal in their shock FA Cup third round victory over Newcastle United in January 1975. Career Andrews began his career as an apprentice with Luton Town in the late 1950s, turning professional in 1960 but leaving the following year without making a first team appearance having suffered from homesickness. He continued his career at non-league level with Lower Gornal Athletic in 1961, reaching the Football League in October 1965 after signing for Cardiff City, along with Gary Bell for a fee of £2,100, a record transfer fee for Gornal that still stands, having been spotted by manager Jimmy Scoular. The Football Association Challenge Vase, usually referred to as the FA Vase, is an annual football competition for teams playing in Steps 5 and 6 of the English National League System (or equivalently, tier 9 or 10 of the overall English football league system). The Football Association Challenge Trophy, commonly known as the FA Trophy, is a men's football knockout cup competition run by and named after the English Football Association and competed for primarily by semi-professional teams. The competition was instigated in 1969 to cater to those non-league clubs that paid their players and were therefore not eligible to enter the FA Amateur Cup. Eligibility rules have changed over time, but from 2008 onwards the competition has been open to clubs playing in Steps 1–4 of the National League System, equivalent to tiers 5–8 of the overall English football league system.
