Gorkovskaya (Nizhny Novgorod Metro)
Gorkovskaya () is a station on the Nizhny Novgorod Metro and is the northern terminus on the Avtozavodskaya line. It opened on November 4, 2012. It is also the only station on the right bank of the Oka River in the historic Upper City section of Nizhny Novgorod. The station is named for Gorky Square, under which the station is situated. Maxim Gorky was born in Nizhny Novgorod and the city was itself named ''Gorky'' until 1990. Construction Construction of the station itself took four years and cost 20 billion rubles. The plans for a station in the Upper City were developed in 1987 in conjunction with the planned construction of the Metromost bridge over the Oka. Construction on the bridge started in 1992, but a lack of a financing interrupted the work several times. The work restarted in 2006 with the initial phase opening in 2009. The Nizhny Novgorod Metro (russian: Нижегородское метро), formerly known as the Gorky Metro (russian: Горьковское метро), is a rapid-transit system which serves the city of Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. Opened in 1985, it consists of 15 stations and is long. The metro connects with the City Rail system at the Moskovskaya station. It has the third-largest number of stations of any Russian subway system, the largest two being Moscow and St. Petersburg. Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street
Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street (russian: Большая Покровская улица, lit=Greater Intercession Street. Short-name - Pokrovka) is the high street in the historical centre of Nizhny Novgorod and one of its oldest streets. Until 1917 it was considered a street for noblemen. Formed as the main street of the city by the end of the 18th century. It is considered an analogue of the Arbat in Moscow or 6-7 Lines of Vasilyevsky Island in St. Petersburg. After the visit of Empress Catherine II, a new regular city plan was developed, providing for a quarterly system. The Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin ( rus, Нижегородский кремль, Nizhegorodskiy Kreml') is a fortress in Nizhny Novgorod, the historic city center. History The first attempt to replace the wooden fort with a stone kremlin was recorded in 1374, but construction was limited to a single tower, known as the Dmitrovskaya Tower (this has not survived). Under the rule of Ivan III, Nizhny Novgorod played the role of a guard city, having a permanent garrison; it served as a place for gathering troops for Moscow’s actions against the Khanate of Kazan. In order to strengthen the defenses of the city, construction works on the walls began again.
