Gordon Upton
Gordon Noel Upton (24 December 192023 February 2010) was an Australian public servant and diplomat. He served as Australian High Commissioner to Ceylon (1965–70), Fiji (1976–1979) and India (1979–1984). While Upton was posted to India, a confidential report that he had authored in October 1980 was leaked to a journalist for ''The Age'', that included criticism of the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The report was confirmed genuine and some members of the Indian parliament called for Upton's expulsion, but the Australian Government's apology satisfied the Indian Government and Upton was allowed to stay. Upton was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1982 in recognition of his services as a diplomat. Life and career Upton was born in Sydney, New South Wales, in 1920. Woden Cemetery
The Woden Cemetery is the main cemetery in Canberra, the capital of Australia. It is located adjacent to the Woden Town Centre. The cemetery opened in 1936 as the Canberra General Cemetery. It closed for burials in 1979, but was re-opened in March 1999. Memorial gardens were opened in 1992, and the Christ the Redeemer Mausoleum, for burial in above-ground vaults, was completed in 2001. The cemetery is nearing capacity; it was announced in February 2009 that it would be full in about 10 years, necessitating the construction of a third cemetery to service the city. Graham Feakes
Graham Barton Feakes (20 March 1930 – 3 December 1994) was an Australian public servant and diplomat. From 1984 to 1990, Feakes was Australian High Commissioner to India. Life and career Feakes, born in Adelaide on 20 March 1930, joined the Australian Public Service in the Department of External Affairs in 1951. He said that his motivation for joining the department was in part due to years spent traveling widely for his father's work as a child. In 1969, Feakes became Australian Ambassador to Cambodia. During his time as ambassador in Phnom Penh, he felt some level of anxiety and concern for his family's safety. From 1972 to 1974, Feakes was assistant secretary in charge of policy research at the Department of Foreign Affairs. Peter Campbell John Curtis (8 September 19295 May 2013) was an Australian public servant and diplomat. Curtis was born on 8 September 1929. He grew up in Sydney, attending Riverview College and later the University of Sydney, before going on to study at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. Maris King
Maris Estelle King (1922–1997) was an Australian public servant and diplomat. King began her Commonwealth Public Service career in 1942 as a typist in the Department of External Affairs. In 1943, King was posted to Chongqing, China. She was the first clerical officer that the Australian Government had sent abroad. From 1951 to 1954, whilst still an external affairs officer, King studied Arts at the Canberra University College. She performed consistently well in her exams, including topping the Melbourne University examination class list in economics from 1952 to 1954. King went on to become the third woman to head an Australian diplomatic mission, as Australian High Commissioner to Nauru from 1977 to 1979. In 1980 she was appointed Australia's first resident High Commissioner to Tonga. She arrived in May 1980, and was living in Nuku'alofa when Cyclone Isaac ravaged Tonga.
