Brighton is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 11 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Bayside local government area. Brighton recorded a population of 23,252 at the 2021 census. Brighton is named after Brighton in England. History In England, on 29 August 1840, Henry Dendy (1800–81) purchased of Port Phillip land at £1 per acre, sight unseen, under the terms of the short-lived Special Survey regulations. Dendy arrived on 5 February 1841 to claim his land. The area was known as Dendy's Special Survey. The area Dendy was compelled to take, called "Waterville", was bound by the coastline to the west and the present day North Road, East Boundary Road and South Road. A town was surveyed in mid-1841, defined by the crescent-shaped street layout which remains today, and subdivided allotments were offered for sale. George David Robinson (21 January 1921 – 12 March 1999) was an Australian doctor and first-class cricketer who played for Western Australia between 1945 and 1948. Life and career Robinson was born in Boulder, Western Australia. His father Alexander had played one match of first-class cricket for Western Australia in 1907–08, and George's younger brother, also born in Boulder, and also named Alexander, played two matches for Western Australia in 1952–53. George Robinson graduated in medicine from the University of Melbourne in 1944, and returned to Western Australia to practise. A batsman who usually batted at number three, Robinson played several matches for Western Australia in 1945-46 and 1946–47. Bill Robinson (footballer, Born 1880)
William Robinson (5 August 1880 – 2 February 1967) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Robinson grew up in Brighton and played his early football for Footscray in the Victorian Football Association (VFA), from 1898 to 1900. He was one of four brothers to play in the VFL, all but one of them with him at Essendon. Having joined Essendon in 1901, Robinson missed just one game all season and was a ruckman in their premiership team. His performances during the premiership campaign saw him selected to represent the league in an interstate match against South Australia. He participated in another Grand Final a year later but ended up on the losing side. After spending the 1903 season in the Metropolitan Association. He returned to Essendon in 1904 and was club captain in 1905, when they finished fourth. His VFL career ended in 1906 when he walked out on the club on following a dispute over Fred Hiskins. Alexander Robinson (19 August 1886 – 4 October 1967) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He also had a noted football career in Western Australia, during which time he became a first-class cricketer for the state team. Early years in Victoria One of four Robinson brothers to play in the VFL, he was just 17 when he played for Essendon in the 1904 VFL season. Australian Football League
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year.
