Gordon Independent School District
Gordon Independent School District is a public school district based in Gordon, Texas (USA). Located in Palo Pinto County, the district serves the city of Mingus and extends into a small portion of northern Erath County. Gordon ISD was rated Exemplary by the Texas Education Agency in 2009 making it the only K-12 district in the county with the high honor. Gordon High School won the 1996 and 1999 UIL six-man football championship. In 2009, the school district was rated " exemplary" by the Texas Education Agency. History The Gordon Independent School District was organized in 1882 and began as a one-room school. Miss Mollie Shelton was the school's first teacher. Gordon is a city in Palo Pinto County, Texas, United States. The population was 478 at the 2010 Census. Geography Gordon is located at (32.544121, –98.365978). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all of it land. History Gordon's history begins in 1864 with the founding of the community of Hampton, Texas. The town of Gordon was planned by the Texas and Pacific Railway one mile south of Hampton in 1874. The new town was named Gordon after the civil engineer responsible for surveying the townsite land. The railroad was built through the area in 1880, and the following year Hampton was moved to meet the railroad. The first classes at the Gordon School were held in 1882, and the post office opened on October 17, 1883 with local businessman Robert Rogan serving as the community's first postmaster. The University Interscholastic League (UIL) is an organization that creates rules for and administers almost all athletic, musical, and academic contests for public primary and secondary schools in the U.S. state of Texas. Six-man football is a variant of gridiron football played with six players per team, instead of the standard 11 or 12. It is generally played by high schools in rural areas of the United States and Canada. History Six-man football was developed in 1934 by Stephen Epler in Chester, Nebraska, as an alternative means for small high schools to field a football team during the Great Depression. The first game was played on Thursday, September 27, 1934, at the Hebron, Nebraska Athletic Gridiron, under the lights, with a crowd of almost 1000 watching. This game was played so that coaches all over Kansas and Nebraska could see if they wanted to try this new game of six-man. Mingus, Texas
Mingus is a city in Palo Pinto County, Texas, United States. The population was 235 at the 2010 census. History In the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, Mingus, known as a "wet" town, had a thriving set of liquor stores and bars patronized by those in "dry" areas in Palo Pinto County and other area counties. This era in Mingus history was memorialized in a comedic country song by John Clay and the Lost Austin Band called "Road to Mingus." The lyrics tell of the deaths of three young men from Strawn, Texas, who travel to Mingus for beer, and, coming home in their '39 Ford, try to beat the Katy at a crossing and die when they are struck by the "reckless railroad train."
