Gordon Byers
Alexander Gordon Byers (7 November 1911 – 20 December 2008) was an international motorcycle speedway rider from England. He was one of the early pioneers of speedway in Britain. Speedway career Byers started riding motorcycles in Sunderland, aged 14 He rode in the inaugural meeting of Newcastle Speedway on 17 May 1929 when the club joined the 1929 Speedway English Dirt Track League. He helped Newcastle to a fourth place position in the league. The following season he stayed with Newcastle (in Gosforth) for the 1930 Speedway Northern League before joining Leeds Lions for the 1931 Speedway Northern League, he was Leeds' leading rider as the team finished runner up to Belle Vue Aces. In 1932, he was considered one of Britain's leading riders and finished fourth in the 1932 Star Riders' Championship, which was the unofficial world championship of the world. Newcastle Diamonds
Newcastle Diamonds were a motorcycle speedway team that raced in the SGB Championship, every Sunday night during the season (March–October) from their home at the Newcastle Stadium on the Fossway, Byker. The Stadium, previously known as Brough Park, is primarily used for greyhound racing with the speedway track built in the centre. Facilities The stadium has a large grandstand located on the home straight and a fully licensed bar which is located on the first floor of the grandstand providing unrestricted views of the stadium. History Early history The club were inaugural members of the 1929 Speedway English Dirt Track League finishing in fourth place and then raced a single season of Northern League in 1930. The club did not race league speedway again until 1938 when they joined the National League. 1932 Speedway National League
The National League was formed in 1932 combining teams from the Northern League and Southern League. It was the fourth season of speedway in the United Kingdom. Summary From the teams that finished the 1931 Northern League, Leeds Lions and Preston closed down, leaving only Belle Vue Aces and Sheffield. From the 1931 Southern League, High Beech and Lea Bridge had closed Plymouth Tigers were new competitors. In the first half of the season, the teams competed for the National Association Trophy in a league format won by Stamford Bridge Pensioners. During this phase Southampton Saints moved to Lea Bridge and rode as Clapton Saints and at the end of the phase Sheffield dropped out. Leeds Lions Riders
Leeds () is a city and the administrative centre of the City of Leeds district in West Yorkshire, England. It is built around the River Aire and is in the eastern foothills of the Pennines.
