Gordon Burness
John Gordon Burness (October 2, 1906 – June 20, 1989) was a soccer wing forward who earned a cap with both the Canadian and U.S. national teams. He began his career in Scotland before moving to Canada and then the United States, where he spent six seasons in the American Soccer League. Club career Born in Montrose, Burness began playing with local junior side Brechin Victoria, then Forfar Athletic in the Scottish Football League in summer 1923. At the end of the same year, he transferred to Brechin City. He then left Scotland for Canada where he played for Toronto Scottish. In 1925, he signed with the Brooklyn Wanderers of the American Soccer League. After two seasons, he transferred to the Boston Soccer Club, winning the 1927–28 league title with them. Burness began the 1929–30 season with Boston, but moved to the New Bedford Whalers after only four games. Montrose, Angus
Montrose ( , gd, Monadh Rois) is a town and former royal burgh in Angus, Scotland. Situated north of Dundee and south of Aberdeen, Montrose lies between the mouths of the North and South Esk rivers. In sport, a cap is a player's appearance in a game at international level. The term dates from the practice in the United Kingdom of awarding a cap to every player in an international match of rugby football and association football. In the early days of football, the concept of each team wearing a set of matching shirts had not been universally adopted, so each side would distinguish itself from the other by wearing a specific sort of cap. An early illustration of the first international football match between Scotland and England in 1872 shows the Scottish players wearing cowls, and the English wearing a variety of school caps. National Challenge Cup
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, commonly known as the U.S. Open Cup (USOC), is a knockout cup competition in men's soccer in the United States of America. It is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in that country. The 2023 U.S. Open Cup competition is currently underway, with the qualifying stages taking place from September 17 - December 18, 2022. The competition was first held during the 1913–1914 season as the National Challenge Cup, with Brooklyn Field Club winning a trophy donated by Thomas Dewar for the promotion of American soccer. New York Soccer Club ( Youth Soccer Team ) was the name of a New York City, New York association football, soccer team that, in 1930, played briefly in the American Soccer League (1921-1933), American Soccer League. In 1923, New York fur merchant Maurice Vandeweghe - the father and grandfather of later basketball stars Ernie Vandeweghe, Ernie and Kiki Vandeweghe - bought the Paterson F.C. (NAFBL), Paterson franchise of the ASL and moved the team to the Bronx New York. It played its matches mainly in the Bronx and some major games at the Polo Grounds. Vandeweghe originally renamed the team the New York National Giants, but in 1924, he changed it to New York Giants. Scottish Football League
The Scottish Football League (SFL) was a league featuring professional and semi-professional football clubs mostly from Scotland.One club, Berwick Rangers, is based in the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, which is located approximately 4 km south of the Anglo-Scottish border. From its foundation in 1890 until the breakaway Scottish Premier League (SPL) was formed in 1998, the SFL was the top level of football in Scotland.
