Gordon Bennett (9 October 1955 – 3 June 2014) was an Australian artist of Aboriginal and Anglo-Celtic descent. Born in Monto, Queensland, Bennett was a significant figure in contemporary Indigenous Australian art. Early life Born in Monto, Queensland, in 1955, of Anglo-Celtic and Aboriginal ancestry, Gordon Bennett grew up in Victoria from the age of four, when his family moved back to Queensland, to the town of Nambour. He attended Nambour State High School. He left school at fifteen and worked in a variety of trades before undertaking formal art studies at the Queensland College of Art, Brisbane between 1986 and 1988. Career Some of his work is about what he saw when he was young. His 1991 painting ''Nine Ricochets'' won the prestigious Moët & Chandon Australian Art Fellowship, and he rapidly established himself as a leading figure in the Australian art world. Lieutenant General Henry Gordon Bennett, (15 April 1887 – 1 August 1962) was a senior Australian Army officer who served in both World War I and World War II. Despite highly decorated achievements during World War I, during which he commanded at both battalion and brigade level and became the youngest general in the Australian Army, Bennett is best remembered for his role in the Battle of Singapore in February 1942 in the Pacific War. As commander of the 8th Australian Division, he escaped while his men became prisoners of the Imperial Japanese Army. After this, Bennett's military career waned and, although he rose to command a corps, he never again commanded troops in battle. In 1945, his escape caused controversy and resulted in a Royal Commission and military enquiry. Both found that he had been unjustified in relinquishing his command. Gordon Dunlap Bennett, S.J. (born October 21, 1946) is an African-American former Catholic prelate who served as Bishop of Mandeville in Jamaica from 2004 to 2006. He was banned from returning to active ministry in two dioceses of the Baltimore Province following a sexual harassment allegation. Bennett is also a former Auxiliary Bishop of Baltimore. An active Jesuit, Bennett is currently a member of the California province. Early life Bennett was born on October 21, 1946, in Denver. He first attended Loyola Grammar School in Denver. After his family moved to Los Angeles in 1955, Bennett went to Holy Spirit Elementary School and then St. Thomas the Apostle Elementary School. Gordon Lockhart Bennett, (October 10, 1912 – February 11, 2000) was a Canadian teacher, politician and the 21st Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island. Born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, he received a Bachelor of Science in 1937 and a Master of Science in Chemistry in 1947 from Acadia University. He started to teach in a school and joined the faculty of the department of Chemistry at Prince of Wales College in 1939. In March 1966, Bennett was elected president of the Dominion Curling Association, succeeding Frank Sargent. In 1966, he was elected as a Liberal candidate as a representative of 5th Queens. James Gordon Bennett Jr. (May 10, 1841May 14, 1918) was publisher of the ''New York Herald'', founded by his father, James Gordon Bennett Sr. (1795–1872), who emigrated from Scotland. He was generally known as Gordon Bennett to distinguish him from his father. Among his many sports-related accomplishments he organized both the first polo match and the first tennis match in the United States, and he personally won the first trans-oceanic yacht race. He sponsored explorers including Henry Morton Stanley's trip to Africa to find David Livingstone, and the ill-fated USS ''Jeannette'' attempt on the North Pole. Gordon Bennett is a comic book character, who appeared in The Beano (but previously the Beezer Annuals), and is named after the exclamation 'Gordon Bennett'.
