Gord Haynes
John Gordon Haynes (June 22, 1918 – December 24, 2004) was a Canadian curler. He played on the 1957 and 1958 Brier-winning Team Albertas, skipped by Matt Baldwin Mathew Martyn Baldwin, CM (born May 3, 1926) is a Canadian curler from Edmonton, Alberta. Macdonald Brier
The Tim Hortons Brier, or simply (and more commonly) the Brier (''french: Le Brier''), is the annual Canadian men's curling championship, sanctioned by Curling Canada. The current event name refers to its main sponsor, the Tim Hortons coffee and donut shop chain. "Brier" originally referred to a brand of tobacco sold by the event's first sponsor, the Macdonald Tobacco Company. The Brier has been held since 1927, traditionally during the month of March. The winner of the Brier goes on to represent Canada at the World Curling Championships of the same year. The 1957 Tim Hortons Brier, Macdonald Brier, the Canada, Canadian men's national curling championship, was held from March 4 to 7, 1957 at Kingston Memorial Centre in Kingston, Ontario. A total of 19,000 fans attended the event. Alberta, Team Alberta, who was Skip (curling), skipped by Matt Baldwin won the Brier Tankard by finishing round robin play unbeaten with a 10–0 record. This was Alberta's sixth Brier championship and the second time Baldwin had won a title as a skip, with his first coming in 1954 Macdonald Brier, 1954. It was also the tenth time in which a team finished a Brier undefeated. Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan's 30–3 victory over New Brunswick in Draw 2 set a Brier record for most points scored in a game by one team (30) and the largest margin of victory in a game (27). 1958 Macdonald Brier
The 1958 Macdonald Brier, the Canadian men's national curling championship, was held from March 3 to 7, 1958 at Victoria Memorial Arena in Victoria, British Columbia. A total of 36,000 fans attended the event. Both Team Alberta and Team Manitoba finished round robin play tied for first with 8-2 records, necessitating a tiebreaker playoff for the Brier championship between the two teams. Alberta, who was skipped by Matt Baldwin won the Brier Tankard for the second year in a row as they defeated Manitoba 10–6 in the tiebreaker game. This was Alberta's seventh Brier championship and the third time Baldwin had won the Brier as a skip, which tied Ken Watson for the most Brier championships as a skip. In addition, Baldwin joined Gordon Hudson as the only skips to win back-to-back Briers as Hudson accomplished the feat in 1928 and 1929. Matt Baldwin
Mathew Martyn Baldwin, CM (born May 3, 1926) is a Canadian curler from Edmonton, Alberta. Curling Baldwin is a three-time Brier champion, having skipped his rink to the Canadian men's championship in 1954, 1957 and 1958. In 1954, Baldwin and his team of Glenn Gray, Pete Ferry and Jim Collins finished with a 9-1 record to claim their first Brier. At age 27, Baldwin was then the youngest skip to win a Brier, in an era when teams were generally led by men decades older. He is also remembered for pleasing a cheering Edmonton hometown crowd by sliding halfway down the sheet of ice when throwing his final rock of the event, a move that was legal under the curling rules of the time. The age record has since been broken; Kerry Burtnyk is the current holder of the mark. As of the 2013 event Baldwin is the oldest surviving Brier champion skip.
