Gopal (caste)
Gopal or Gauda is an Indian caste, which is a synonym of Ahir from Odisha State in East India. Their traditional occupation include dairy farming, cattle herding, cultivation and carrying palanquins of deities. They also worked as Paikas (soldiers) under the kings. They claim Kshatriya status and in hierarchy, they occupy the rank next to Khandayats. They also owned Zamindaris in Ranapura, Nayagarh and Khandapara regions of Odisha. They find mention in Mahabharata as soldiers of Narayani Sena. As per the census of India, they are the second largest caste in Odisha and comprise more than 16% of population. as well. Gopal Swami Khetanchi (born 15 February 1958) is an Indian painter based in Jaipur. Hailing from an artistic family in north Rajasthan, Khetanchi studied fine art in Jaipur and worked for some time as an assistant art director in Bollywood and an illustrator for magazines, before returning to Rajasthan to focus on painting. Khetanchi is known for painting petite female figures, Rajput women, Rajasthani village women and forts, as well as adapting classical European paintings to Indian versions. Another form associated with him is calendar kitsch. Distinguishing features of his style are uniqueness, delicacy and swiftness of drawing. Gopal Kumar Goyal (born 29 December 1965), commonly known as Gopal Goyal Kanda, is a businessman and member of the Haryana Legislative Assembly in India. Kanda was elected to the legislative assembly of the state of Haryana in 2009 as an Independent representative for the Sirsa constituency. He served for some time as a minister in the Government of Haryana before resigning his post in the wake of legal charges being filed against him. Gopal Ghose (5 December 1913 – 30 July 1980) was an Indian painter from West Bengal. In 1943, he was one of the founders of the Calcutta Group, perhaps the first group of modernist painters in India. Life and career Ghose was born in Calcutta, West Bengal on 5 December 1913. After obtaining a diploma in painting from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Jaipur in 1935, he trained in sculpture at the Government College of Art and Crafts, Chennai in 1938, where he studied under Debi Prasad Roy Choudhuri. Gopal Hari Deshmukh (18 February 1823 – 9 October 1892) was an Indian activist, thinker, social reformer and writer from Maharashtra. His original surname was Shidhaye. Because of 'Vatan' (right of Tax collection) that the family had received, the family was later called Deshmukh. Deshmukh is regarded as an important figure of the Social Reform Movement in Maharashtra.
