John Goode (Virginia Politician)
John Goode Jr. (May 27, 1829 – July 14, 1909) was a Virginia attorney and Democratic politician. He served in both the United States Congress and the Confederate Congress, and was a colonel in the Confederate Army. He was Solicitor General of the United States during the presidency of Grover Cleveland. He was known as "the grand old man of Virginia." Early life Goode was born in Liberty (now Bedford), the county seat of Bedford County, Virginia. He was first son of Ann (née Leftwich) and John Goode (1796-1876), a veteran of the War of 1812, who lived on a plantation and enslaved 39 individuals. Sir Charles Henry Goode (, 26 May 1827 – 5 February 1922) was a British Australian merchant, businessman, politician and philanthropist in the early days South Australia. He founded Goode, Durrant and Company in 1882. History He was born at Hinton, near Peterchurch, Herefordshire on 26 May 1827, and was apprenticed at the age of 12 years to a drapery establishment in Hereford, and in 1845 he proceeded to London, where he worked for Goode, Gainsborough and Co. and was, with later fellow-Adelaidean R. A. Tarlton, one of the first members of YMCA and closely identified with its founder Sir George Williams. George Coleridge Emerson Goode (29 November 1914 – 2 October 2015) was a British Jamaican-born jazz bassist best known for his long collaboration with alto saxophonist Joe Harriott. Goode was a member of Harriott's innovatory jazz quintet throughout its eight-year existence as a regular unit (1958–65). Goode was also involved with the saxophonist's later pioneering blend of jazz and Indian music in Indo-Jazz Fusions, the group Harriott co-led with composer/violinist John Mayer. Group Captain Harry King Goode, (22 October 1892 – 21 August 1942) was an officer of the Royal Air Force (RAF). During World War I, he was a flying ace credited with 15 aerial victories. He remained in RAF service until retiring in 1941. Charles Rufus Goode (27 April 1844 – 4 August 1913) was a pastoralist and politician in the early days of South Australia. History Charles Rufus Goode was born on 27 April 1844, at Kyre Magna, in Worcestershire, England, and came to Australia in 1860. Immediately after his arrival he went to Canowie station, under instructions from the Hon. H. Scott, whom he saw before leaving England. Later he engaged in pastoral pursuits in the Port Lincoln district with his cousin (Mr. S. Goode), and subsequently entered into the service of Elder and Stuckey, in connection with stations in the Far North. Alexander David Goode (born 7 May 1988) is an English professional rugby union player playing for Saracens in Premiership Rugby. Biography All-rounder Goode appeared at the national schools athletics finals, played county tennis and was part of the Ipswich Town football academy before joining Saracens.
