Goodall Cup
The Goodall Cup is a perpetual trophy that is, currently, annually awarded to the playoff champions of the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL). The trophy is named after Australian born player John Edwin Goodall who originally donated the cup. The Goodall Cup was originally gifted to the Inter-State Series, which was an annual 3 game series held between state teams, representing a selection of the best available players in each state. It was the championship trophy awarded to the first team to win 2 out of the 3 games in the Inter-State Series, that team would remain in possession of the cup until the following tournament. The first evidence of the Goodall Cup having been presented was on 18 September 1911 by VAIHSA President Philip John Rupert Steele Sr to New South Wales Captain Jim Kendall, after being donated by John Edwin Goodall. The modern day version of the cup is instantly recognisable by the distinct single gold band of plaques around the lower barrel portion of the ... John Edwin Goodall
John Edwin Goodall (1893 St Kilda, Victoria, Australia - 1960 in Brighton, Victoria, Australia) was an Australian ice hockey player, president of the Australian Ice Hockey Association (since 1923), and founder of the Goodall Cup which he donated to the annual inter-state ice hockey tournament. Early life John Edwin Goodall was the second child of Charles Edwin Goodall and Ada Jessie Dougharty. Their first child, Chas John Goodall was born in 1890 but lived for only 10 days. 1913 Goodall Cup Finals
The 1913 Goodall Cup Final marks the fifth inter-state ice hockey championship in Australia and the last championship played before the series was suspended due to World War I. The series ;Game one 13 August 1913 Saw the return of the inter-state series to the Melbourne Glaciarium. Victoria and New South Wales were deadlocked at 2-2 by the end of the first half, with Jim Kendall scoring both goals for New South Wales. In the second half they out played New South Wales and scored 4 more goals to win the first game of the series by a score of 6-2. ;Game two 15 August 1913 The first half of the game K. Walker opened the scoring for Victoria with a long shot from the right wing. The Victorian Ice Hockey Association, currently trading as Ice Hockey Victoria is the governing body of ice hockey in Victoria, Australia. The Victorian Ice Hockey Association is a branch of Ice Hockey Australia. History Ice Hockey Victoria is the first ice hockey association formed in Australia. 12 September 1908 is the date of the formation of the first ice hockey association in Australia. The meeting at the Melbourne Glaciarium occurred directly after an evening ice hockey game between the Brighton Ice Hockey Club and the Melburnians, which resulted in a 2–2 tie. The meeting was for the purpose of organising a club for the following season and the following committee was appointed: Lorimer, Ward, Errol Forster Woods, Walter Purbrick and Andrew Lambert Reid. The 1911 Goodall Cup Final marks the third Inter-State Series ice hockey championship in Australia and the first of these championships won by New South Wales. As the second elected president of the Victorian Amateur Ice Hockey Sports Association, Philip John Rupert Steele Sr. ,presented a cup, gifted by John Edwin Goodall to the Captain of the winning New South Wales Team, Jim Kendall. The series ;Game one 13 September 1911 was the first game of the series and saw the domination of Jim Kendall, who arrived from Canada 2 years before, in the game by scoring all 5 goals for New South Wales in the 5–3 win over Victoria. Mistakes in the early parts of the game by the Victorian team were used by the team to let Jim Kendall curve and twist around the opposition. The 1912 Goodall Cup Final marks the fourth inter-state ice hockey championship in Australia and the second of these championships won by New South Wales, the first being won in their home arena.
