People's Monarchist Party (Portugal)
The People's Monarchist Party ( pt, Partido Popular Monárquico, ) is a political party in Portugal. It was founded in 1974 by various groups opposing the Estado Novo, in the context of the Carnation Revolution. Currently it is a small monarchist party with little political support. It is known that the claimant to the Portuguese throne, Dom Duarte Pio, Duke of Braganza, does not support this party officially, especially during the period of its leadership by Nuno da Câmara Pereira, a known supporter of the Duke of Loulé’s claim to the throne. The party had, until 2009, two representatives in the Assembly of the Republic, elected on the lists of the Social Democratic Party, following an agreement with the latter party's leader, Pedro Santana Lopes. In 2009, under the leadership of Câmara Pereira, the party decided to run in the elections of that year on its own, gaining no seats. The party had not been elected on its own since the dissolution of the Democratic Allianc ...

2009 Lisbon Local Election
The 2009 Lisbon local election was held on 11 October 2009 to elect the members of the Lisbon City Council. Mayor since 2007, António Costa, was able to win a full term as mayor with 44 percent of the votes and achieving an absolute majority. In this election, he joined forces with Helena Roseta's ''Citizen for Lisbon'' movement. He defeated former Lisbon mayor and Prime Minister Pedro Santana Lopes, which gathered almost 39 percent of the votes and elected 7 councillors. The Unitary Democratic Coalition presented, just like in 2007, Ruben de Carvalho as their mayoral candidate, but lost support compared with 2007, winning 8 percent of the votes and losing one councillor. The Left Bloc, presented Luís Fazenda as a candidate for Mayor, but failed to hold on to their council seat. Turnout grew considerably compared with the 2007 by-election, with just 53.4 percent of voters casting a ballot on election day. Background The 2007 by-election was called after former mayor Carm ...

Pedro Álvares Cabral
Pedro Álvares Cabral ( or ; born Pedro Álvares de Gouveia; c. 1467 or 1468 – c. 1520) was a Portuguese nobleman, military commander, navigator and explorer regarded as the European discoverer of Brazil. He was the first human in history to ever be in 4 continents, uniting all of them in his famous voyage of 1500, where he also conducted the first substantial exploration of the northeast coast of South America and claimed it for Portugal. While details of Cabral's early life remain unclear, it is known that he came from a minor noble family and received a good education. He was appointed to head an expedition to India in 1500, following Vasco da Gama's newly-opened route around Africa. The undertaking had the aim of returning with valuable spices and of establishing trade relations in India—bypassing the monopoly on the spice trade then in the hands of Arab, Turkish and Italian merchants. Although the previous expedition of Vasco da Gama to India, on its sea rou ...

2021 Lisbon Local Election
The 2021 Lisbon local election was held on 26 September 2021 to elect the members of the Lisbon City Council. In what was the biggest surprise of the 2021 municipal elections, Carlos Moedas, the candidate of the center-right coalition led by the Social Democratic Party, managed to be elected Mayor of Lisbon and put an end to 14 years of Socialist rule. Against all expectations, the center-right coalition managed to regain the capital by winning 34.3% of the votes and 7 councilors. Despite his victory, Carlos Moedas will have to seek understandings with the other parties represented in the City Council. The big loser in this election was Fernando Medina, candidate of the Socialist Party (which ran in alliance with LIVRE), as he lost his reelection bid, an office he had hold since 2015 and which had been in Socialist hands since 2007. Unexpectedly, the Socialists lost almost 10% of the votes, compared with the previous election, with Medina labeling the defeat as "personal". The U ...

Social Democratic Party (Portugal)
The Social Democratic Party ( pt, Partido Social Democrata, ; PSD) is a liberal-conservative political party in Portugal. Commonly known by its colloquial initials PSD, on ballot papers its initials appear as its official form PPD/PSD, with the first three letters coming from the party's original name, the Democratic People's Party (, PPD). A party of the centre-right, the PSD is one of the two major parties in Portuguese politics, its rival being the Socialist Party (PS) on the centre-left. The PSD was founded in 1974, two weeks after the Carnation Revolution and in 1976 adopted its current name. In 1979, the PSD allied with centre-right parties to form the Democratic Alliance and won that year's election. After the 1983 general election, the party formed a grand coalition with the Socialist Party, known as the Central Bloc, before winning the 1985 general election under new leader Aníbal Cavaco Silva, who shifted the party to the right. Cavaco Silva served as Prime Min ...

2013 Lisbon Local Election
The 2013 Lisbon local election was held on 29 September 2013 to elect the members of the Lisbon City Council. Against a weak opposition, António Costa, mayor since 2007, was elected for a full second term, defeating Fernando Seara, by then incumbent and term limited mayor of Sintra, of the ''Feel Lisbon'' coalition between the Social Democratic Party (PSD), CDS–People's Party (CDS–PP) and Earth Party (MPT) by a landslide, 51 to 22 percent. Seara's candidacy was surrounded in controversy due to the recent changes in the law that established term limits for mayors. This law prohibits a candidate, after having served for three terms, to run for Mayor, Municipal Assemblies or Parish Assemblies. But the law did not explicitly state whether it prohibits reelection only for the same municipality or parish, or for the same position in ''any'' municipality or parish. This matter was only resolved on 5 September 2013 with a ruling of the Constitutional Court allowing mayoral candidate ...
