Palais Gomperz is a '' Ringstraßenpalais'' in Vienna, Austria. It was built for the aristocratic Gomperz family. History It was built by Ludwig Förster in 1860/61 and acquired by the brothers Julius and Max Gomperz, both of whom were successful bankers in Vienna. They were important actors in the economic life of the monarchy. Julius Gomperz was a member of the Moravian state parliament, sat in the Reichsrat from 1871/72, was president of the Brno Jewish community from 1872, became a hereditary member of the Austrian manor and in 1879 was raised to the nobility. Gompertz Function
The Gompertz curve or Gompertz function is a type of mathematical model for a time series, named after Benjamin Gompertz (1779–1865). It is a sigmoid function which describes growth as being slowest at the start and end of a given time period. The right-side or future value asymptote of the function is approached much more gradually by the curve than the left-side or lower valued asymptote. This is in contrast to the simple logistic function in which both asymptotes are approached by the curve symmetrically. It is a special case of the generalised logistic function. The function was originally designed to describe human mortality, but since has been modified to be applied in biology, with regard to detailing populations. Lewis Gompertz ( – 2 December 1861) was an English writer and inventor, and early animal rights and veganism advocate. He was a founding member, in June 1824, of the English Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals; later the RSPCA. Gompertz was the younger brother of the mathematician and actuary Benjamin Gompertz and the poet Isaac Gompertz. Biography Gompertz was born into a large and wealthy family of London diamond merchants, the fifth son of his father Solomon Barent Gompertz's (1729 – ) second marriage. Being Jewish, Gompertz and his siblings were not allowed to attend university and instead received an informal education. Gompertz was a vegan and opposed to humans intentionally using animals for human interests in any way. He refused to wear leather or silk and declined to ride in coaches due to the suffering of the horses. Benjamin Gompertz
Benjamin Gompertz (5 March 1779 – 14 July 1865) was a British self-educated mathematician and actuary, who became a Fellow of the Royal Society. Gompertz is now best known for his Gompertz law of mortality, a demographic model published in 1825. He was the brother of the early animal rights activist and inventor Lewis Gompertz and the poet Isaac Gompertz. Aaron Solomon Gumperz
Aaron Solomon Gumperz (December 10, 1723 – April 10, 1769) was a Jewish German scholar and physician. In March, 1751, Gumperz graduated with a degree in medicine from the University of Frankfurt (Oder), his dissertation being "''Ueber die Temperamente''" (tr. About the temperaments). He was the first Prussian Jew who obtained a doctor's degree. Gumperz was especially known for having been Moses Mendelssohn's teacher of philosophy and for having inspired him with a love for literature. He is noted for introducing Mendelssohn to Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (author of '' Nathan the Wise'') for his skilled chess playing and teaching not only philosophy, but Western languages and science as well. Women on Waves (WoW) is a Dutch nongovernmental organization ( NGO) created in 1999 by Dutch physician Rebecca Gomperts, in order to bring reproductive health services, particularly non-surgical abortion services and education, to women in countries with restrictive abortion laws. Rebecca Gomperts (born 1966) is a Dutch physician and activist for women's rights, in particular abortion rights. She is the founder of Women on Waves and Women on Web, which provide reproductive health services for women in countries where these are not provided. In 2013 and 2014, she was included in the BBC's 100 Women. In 2018, she founded Aid Access, which operates in the United States. A trained abortion specialist and activist, she is generally considered the first abortion rights activist to cross international borders. The American Federation of Labor (A.F. of L.) was a national federation of labor unions in the United States that continues today as the AFL-CIO. It was founded in Columbus, Ohio, in 1886 by an alliance of craft unions eager to provide mutual support and disappointed in the Knights of Labor. Samuel Gompers was elected the full-time president at its founding convention and reelected every year, except one, until his death in 1924. He became the major spokesperson for the union movement. Samuel Gompers
Samuel Gompers (; January 27, 1850December 13, 1924) was a British-born American cigar maker, labor union leader and a key figure in American labor history. Gompers founded the American Federation of Labor (AFL) and served as the organization's president from 1886 to 1894, and from 1895 until his death in 1924. He promoted harmony among the different craft unions that comprised the AFL, trying to minimize jurisdictional battles. He promoted thorough organization and collective bargaining in order to secure shorter hours and higher wages, which he considered the essential first steps to emancipating labor.
