The Black Friday gold panic of September 24, 1869 was caused by a conspiracy between two investors, Jay Gould and his partner James Fisk, and Abel Corbin, a small time speculator who had married Virginia (Jennie) Grant, the younger sister of President Ulysses Grant. They formed the ''Gold Ring'' to corner the gold market and force up the price of metal on the New York Gold Exchange. The scandal took place during the Presidency of Ulysses S. Grant, whose policy was to sell Treasury gold at weekly intervals to pay off the national debt, stabilize the dollar, and boost the economy. The country had gone through tremendous upheaval during the Civil War and was not yet fully restored. Gould and Fisk hoped to take advantage of Corbin's relationship with his brother-in-law—the president—and Gould persuaded Corbin to introduce him to Grant. Mount Goldring () is a peak on Pernik Peninsula, Loubet Coast, situated on the north side of Murphy Glacier, to the east of Lallemand Fjord in Graham Land, Antarctica. It was mapped from air photos obtained by the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition, 1956–57, and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for Denis C. The white crappie (''Pomoxis annularis'') is a freshwater fish found in North America, one of the two species of crappies. Goldring (audio Company)
Goldring is an audio equipment manufacturing company that was established in 1906. In 1906, the Scharf brothers started manufacturing phonographs in Berlin, Germany. The company moved to England in 1933 and continued manufacturing cartridges and turntables. The "Juwel Electro Soundbox" phonograph was their own creation and was released in 1926. The Goldring logo was as indication of quality. In 1954 they released the Goldring 500 magnetic cartridge. This was British-made. Goldring cartridges have been sold in the US since the 1950s and are sold all over the world. They range from budget to high-end. They also sold Swiss-made Lenco turntables in the 1970s. For example, the Lenco L75 was marketed via Goldring as a GL75. The Scharf brothers changed their name to Sharp and continued their family business until 1987. Helenton Loch
Helenton Loch was situated in a low lying area between the farms and dwellings of Helentongate, Mains, and Burnbank in the Parish of Symington, South Ayrshire, Scotland. The loch was natural, sitting in a hollow, a kettle hole, created by glaciation. The loch waters ultimately drained via the Pow Burn.
