The Gouden Spike ( en, Golden Spike) is the most important athletics prize in Belgium Belgium, ; french: Belgique ; german: Belgien officially the Kingdom of Belgium, is a country in Northwestern Europe. Until 1987, the prize was alternated between track and field disciplines to tha athlete with the best performance of the last two years among the athletes who never won the prize; because it was only possible to win the prize once. Since 1974, for the first time also an award for female athletes was added. Since 1988 the best male and female athlete and also the best male and female Belgian young talent of the year are elected. Athletics is a group of sporting events that involves competitive running, jumping, throwing, and walking. The most common types of athletics competitions are track and field, road running, cross country running, and racewalking. Anne-Marie Pira (born 6 February 1955) is a retired Belgian heptathlete who excelled in the hurdles and jumping events. She was born in Brussels. Pira became Belgian heptathlon champion in 1976, 1977 and 1979. She also won the 100 metres hurdles in 1975, 1976, 1977, 1979 and 1980; the high jump in 1976, 1977 and 1978; and the long jump in 1980. In the high jump she finished 17th at the 1976 Olympic Games and competed at the 1978 European Championships without reaching the final. Bruno Brokken (born 9 May 1953 in Wilrijk) is a former Belgian high jumper. In 1976 he got the bronze medal at the European Indoor Championships with a jump of 2.19 meter. Biography Bruno Brokken was the 1975 Belgian Sportsman of the year, ending the six consecutive titles for Eddy Merckx. He tried his hand at other sports like soccer, basketball and especially judo before starting with athletics. He quit as a judoka when he was 15 years old with a brown belt when his father founded Wilrijk Atletiek Club, an athletics club. After trying his hand at the javelin, he switched to the high jump. A year later, he jumped over 2.04 meter using the straddle technique. Only seventeen years old, he won the Belgian Championships in 1971.
