Golden Sounds
Golden Sounds, later known as Zangaléwa, was a makossa group from Cameroon, formed in 1984 by active members of Cameroon's presidential guard: Jean Paul Zé Bella, Dooh Belley, Luc Eyebe and Emile Kojidie. The group is most famous for its song, " Zangaléwa", which was a huge hit in Africa after its release in 1986, and was revived in 2010 when Shakira sampled it for the 2010 FIFA World Cup as Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)", also known as "Waka Waka (Esto es África)" in Spanish, is a song by Colombian singer Shakira, featuring the South African band Freshlyground. Cameroon
Cameroon (; french: Cameroun, ff, Kamerun), officially the Republic of Cameroon (french: République du Cameroun, links=no), is a country in west-central Africa. Makossa is a Cameroonian style of urban music. Like much other late 20th century music of Sub-Saharan Africa, it uses strong electric bass rhythms and prominent brass. In the 1980s makossa had a wave of mainstream success across Africa and to a lesser extent abroad. Makossa, which means "(I) dance" in the Douala language, Section "Cultural-based terms" (last line) originated from a Douala dance called the '' kossa''. Emmanuel Nelle Eyoum started using the refrain ''kossa kossa'' in his songs with his group "Los Calvinos". The style began to take shape in the 1950s though the first recordings were not seen until a decade later. There were artists such as Eboa Lotin, Misse Ngoh and especially Manu Dibango, who popularised makossa throughout the world with his song "Soul Makossa" in 1972. Presidential Guard (Cameroon)
The Cameroon Presidential Guard (french: Garde présidentielle du Cameroun, GP), is a military protection unit of the Cameroon Armed Forces. Unlike the Republican Guard, which existed until early 1984 and was placed under the authority of the General Delegate for the Gendarmerie, the GP reports directly to the President. History In the spring of 1984, the presidential Republican Guard became responsible for an attempted coup d'état against President Paul Biya. The violence ended several days later and resulted in the execution of 35 members of the guard as well as the declaration of a 6-month state of emergency in Yaoundé and the surrounding region. Accusations arose of former President Ahmadou Ahidjo's involvement, given his ethnic connection to the majority Hausa guard. After the coup, the GC's ethnically Fulani and Hausa personnel were replaced with personnel from the Bulu subgroup of the Beti-Pahuin peoples. Zamina Mina (Zangaléwa)
"Zamina mina (Zangaléwa)" was a hit song in 1969, by the Cameroonian makossa group Golden Sounds. Background The languages present in the song's lyrics (Douala, French, Jamaican Patois, and the pidgin English of some parts of West Africa) make clear the song originates from the area of Cameroon, but the circumstances surrounding the time of the song's origin are less clear. Some sources indicate that the lyrics are a lament from the point of view of a single soldier. Other aspects of the song, including its frequent performances, have led to conflicting claims that the song is a tribute to African soldiers of World War II or a criticism of Africans who collaborated with European colonial authorities. Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)
"Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)", also known as "Waka Waka (Esto es África)" in Spanish, is a song by Colombian singer Shakira, featuring the South African band Freshlyground. Ewondo Language
Ewondo or Kolo is the language of the Ewondo people (more precisely Beti be Kolo or simply Kolo-Beti) of Cameroon. The language had 577,700 native speakers in 1982. Ewondo is a trade language. Dialects include Badjia (Bakjo), Bafeuk, Bamvele (Mvele, Yezum, Yesoum), Bane, Beti, Enoah, Evouzok, Fong, Mbida-Bani, Mvete, Mvog-Niengue, Omvang, Yabekolo (Yebekolo), Yabeka, and Yabekanga. Ewondo speakers live primarily in Cameroon's Centre Region and the northern part of the Océan division in the South Region. Ewondo is a Bantu language. It is a dialect of the Beti language (Yaunde-Fang), and is intelligible with Bulu, Eton, and Fang.
