Golden Opportunities 2
The ''Golden Opportunities 2'' is a free downloadable EP by indie rock band Okkervil River, containing the covers of five songs – the product of a one-day studio session, recorded onto a two track tape by Danny Reisch at Premium Recording in Austin, TX. It was released as a free download from the band's website on November 28, 2011. It is a sequel to their 2007 album, ''Golden Opportunities Mixtape''. Okkervil River (band)
Okkervil River is an American rock band led by singer-songwriter Will Sheff. Formed in Austin, Texas, in 1998, the band takes its name from a short story by Russian author Tatyana Tolstaya set on the river Okkervil in Saint Petersburg. They began as a trio made up of Sheff and friends he had met in his native state of New Hampshire but, over time, have gone through many lineups. Okkervil River self-released their first album, ''Stars Too Small to Use,'' which led them to the South by Southwest music festival. After recording their first album in a garage, they signed with Jagjaguwar. They continued by releasing four more albums, including the critically lauded concept album '' Black Sheep Boy''. After a period of touring for ''Black Sheep Boy'', Okkervil River followed up with '' The Stage Names''. The album sold 10,000 in its opening week in the United States. ''I Am Very Far'' is the sixth album by Okkervil River, released on May 10, 2011. It was produced primarily in Austin, Texas, Austin, Connecticut and Brooklyn by lead singer Will Sheff with John Congleton and Phil Palazzolo. Recording and production ''I Am Very Far'' marked a distinct break from the polished, hyper-literary folk-rock that Okkervil River had explored on their previous two albums, ''The Stage Names'' and ''The Stand Ins''. In the words of songwriter Will Sheff, "I found myself wanting to not be accessible and not be crowd pleasing and basically be self-pleasing and follow what I thought was really interesting." ''The Silver Gymnasium'' is the seventh album by American indie rock band Okkervil River, released on September 3, 2013. It is the band's first release after signing to ATO Records, and their first album not released through Jagjaguwar. Overview ''The Silver Gymnasium'' was first announced in June 2013, its name revealed letter-by-letter via the band's website. The record is a concept album which takes place in lead-singer Will Sheff's home-town of Meriden, New Hampshire in 1986. Sheff conceived the album as a tribute to the spirit of pre-adolescence, meant to evoke the nostalgic feeling of, in his words “an action figure you found in the woods.” The album's title is taken from the ''Charles Lewis Silver Memorial Gymnasium'' found in Meriden's Kimball Union Academy, the boarding school that Sheff attended. David McComb
David Richard McComb (17 February 19622 February 1999) was an Australian musician. He was the singer-songwriter and guitarist of the Australian bands, The Triffids (1976–89) and The Blackeyed Susans (1989–93). He also had a solo career including leading David McComb and The Red Ponies. Over his career McComb had bouts of alcoholism, and amphetamine and heroin abuse. He developed cardiomyopathy and in 1996 underwent a heart transplant. David McComb died on 2 February 1999 "due to heroin toxicity and mild acute rejection of his 1996 heart transplant", according to the coroner. In May 2001, the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA), as part of its 75th Anniversary celebrations, named "Wide Open Road" by The Triffids – written by McComb – as one of the APRA Top 30 Australian songs, Top 30 Australian songs of all time. Bill Fay
Bill Fay (born William Fay; 1943) is an English singer-songwriter. His early recordings were released by Deram Records, Deram, but following the release of his second album in 1971, Fay was dropped by the label. His work enjoyed a growing cult status in the 1990s, and his older works were re-issued in 1998 and 2004/2005. Fay's 2012 album ''Life Is People'' was his first album of all-new material since 1971. His most recent album, ''Countless Branches'', was released on 17 January 2020. Biography Early career Fay was born in north London, where he still lives. Dry Bones (folk Song)
"Dry Bones" is a folk song, included in Harry Everett Smith, Harry Smith's ''Anthology of American Folk Music'' under the heading "Social Music". On this collection it is sung by Bascom Lamar Lunsford (1929). The song is also performed by alternative country duo The Handsome Family on their 2003 album ''Singing Bones''. The song also features on Golden Opportunities 2, an EP released by Okkervil River in 2011. Synopsis This song's five verses refer to different biblical stories. The first verse refers to Enoch from Book of Genesis, Genesis 5:21-24. Verse 2 is based on Acts of the Apostles, Acts 16:25-26. The third verse refers to Moses and the burning bush from Book of Exodus, Exodus 3:2. The fourth verse (and the title) is based on the story from Ezekiel 37:1-10. The last verse hints to the familiar story from Book of Genesis, Genesis 3, although in Lunsford's version what Eve is saying is unclear.
