Golden Calf (award)
The Golden Calf ( nl, Gouden Kalf) is the award of the Netherlands Film Festival, which is held annually in Utrecht. The award has been presented since 1981, originally in six categories: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Feature Film, Best Short Film, Culture Prize and Honourable mention. In 2004, there were 16 award categories, mainly because in 2003 the categories Best Photography, Best Montage, Best Music, Best Production Design, Best Sound Design were added. The film stars Yorick van Wageningen, Juda Goslinga, and Goua Robert Grovogui; it is one of three films in which Jeroen Willems, who died in 2012, appears posthumously. Background Guido van Driel, a cartoonist from Amsterdam, was assigned a graphic novel related to Saint Boniface, on the occasion of the 1250 anniversary of his martyrdom, by the Dongeradeel municipality in which Dokkum is located, the place of the saint's martyrdom. ''The Girl and Death'' ( nl, Het Meisje en de Dood) is a 2012 Dutch film directed by Jos Stelling. Plot ''The Girl and Death'' is a love story of Nicolai and Elise (a courtesan). Their love is obstructed by materialism, wealth, and death. The film, based on an original script by Jos Stelling and Bert Rijkelijkhuizen, tells the story of the Russian physician Nicolai, who returns to an old hotel, the place where he first met his great love half a century ago and relives his romantic tragedy. A large part of the film is set in the late nineteenth century, and the action takes place in an abandoned hotel/sanatorium in , Thuringia where most of the film was also shot.
