Gold Strike Hot Springs, also known as Goldstrike Hot Springs, Nevada Hot Springs and Gold Strike Canyon Hot Springs are a group of hot springs near Hoover Dam on the Arizona/Nevada border near historic Boulder City. They are in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. History Indigenous people used hot springs throughout the American Southwest for thousands of years, based on archaeological evidence of human use and settlement by Paleo-Indians. Thermal springs provided warmth, healing mineral water, and cleansing. Geology and geography The geothermally heated spring water seeps out of the cliffs in Gold Strike Canyon, and collects in a series of primitive rock soaking pools. The series of collecting pools go for approximately two miles along the canyon. The canyon has been known for flash floods. Hot Springs
A hot spring, hydrothermal spring, or geothermal spring is a spring produced by the emergence of geothermally heated groundwater onto the surface of the Earth. The groundwater is heated either by shallow bodies of magma (molten rock) or by circulation through faults to hot rock deep in the Earth's crust. In either case, the ultimate source of the heat is radioactive decay of naturally occurring radioactive elements in the Earth's mantle, the layer beneath the crust. Hoover Dam
Hoover Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives. Lake Mead National Recreation Area is a U.S. national recreation area in southeastern Nevada and northwestern Arizona.
